AMR files for Chapter 11 / Horton named Chairman and CEO (29 Nov 2011)
Today's print edition of the Dallas Morning News has an exclusive 2 page article starting on the front page saying AMR is filing CH 11 today and CEO Arpey is to resign. Strange though nothing is on the DMN online version though.
here is the online link. It is buried on their web site which is strange given the prominence in today's print edition.

MODERATORS' NOTE
General Information:
AMR has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which is a corporate reorganization, NOT liquidation (Chapter 7). This provides the corporation with certain relief options with respect to creditors and contracts, including labor contracts and aircraft leases. In general, the customer / passenger will NOT see any immediate changes to AA, American Eagle, or AAdvantage as a direct result of this bankruptcy process, although future changes as a result of revisions to AMR's business model are always possible.

In the long run, this is good news. I support this move and hope to see AMR come out a stronger airline. I have little doubt it will, just like we saw with Delta, United and US Airways.
Also, Arpey is gone. Horton is replacing him.

Looks like it's official. The story is both on PR Newswire AND aa.com itself:

Most unfortunate, but not unexpected. Good luck to all the pilots and FAs who were using the unions to hold on to the wages and benefits of an era past (and trying to get back more). I suspect most of them would have been better off negotiating realistically when they had a chance to. And I think we can also hope that Arpey's team will be replaced with a competent visionary group of folks...
