AA: Two-foot hole appears in plane at 31,000 feet
MIAMI -- There was quite a scare for passengers on an American Airlines flight out of Miami.
On Tuesday, Flight 1640, a Boeing 757, experienced a sudden loss of cabin pressure. According to the airline, the Boston-bound flight had 154 passengers and six crew members aboard.
The incident occurred at 31,000 feet and oxygen masks automatically deployed.
The crew declared an emergency and were able to bring the plane down safely. The plane has been taken out of service.

The cause of the problem is still unknown, but investigators found a hole in the plane. The hole was over the front door of the Boeing 757-223 where passengers typically enter. American Airlines described the hole as small, roughly one foot by two feet.
One foot by two feet? That would seem to be one serious hole.

Now there's a FlyerTalker who knows how to cut to the chase!
"After the landing, inspectors found a hole of about 1 foot by 2 feet just above the "A" of the American Airlines logo of the jet's front left cabin door, The Aviation Herald reported." Ah, it was an advertising gimmick...
But if I had a flight scheduled on a 757, I'd keep an eye on the schedule, and seats in case an aircraft is subbed for mine. I will betcha dollars to doughnuts every 757 will be getting a very close eyeballing.

Actually, on something (maybe not so) similar, an engine cover that flew off on takeoff at BRU and took a chunk out of the wing requiring landing at LHR and rebooking from there, AA sent a voucher for the full fare paid without any prompting.

See now, AA missed a marketing opportunity here. Instead of the obvious crumbling planes and lack of maintenance, they should have issued a press release touting a new feature:
"Tired of seeing your travels through a small porthole window ? AA announces new Domeliner service to enhance your travel experience on select aircraft."
