Many times I have been forced into instant upgrade eligible fares 4-6 weeks out and still never clearing if not available at booking. It's rough.

7/20/17 ANC-ADQ AS49 MVPG (Family member) Upgraded T-72 (award w class). Changed ticket last minute to later in the year. Great though, as this started as a 73Q.

My monday SEA-DFW AS664 flight is going to be even uglier.
It's been F0 for awhile and I had to buy an H fare 6 weeks in advance.
Why they downsized to a -800 from a -900ER for the summer is beyond me!
I have M and B fares coming up, cheapest available purchased 6 weeks in advance, that I am sure will never clear.
I have a ton of GGUs I can't even use to help me. On UA I could use instruments to give me a little edge waitlisting over others.
AS is getting their money though....

For me, twice I asked about paying for it and they gave it to me free. Once they called me up. And one time I was looking to pay up to F, they said they would upgrade me free to MCS then apply the fee to F as that would make the fee to F considerable cheaper.
