Upgrade on UA Ticket, NZ Metal

Hi, I have a friend flying to Huston in a weeks time in economy on Air New Zealand but with a UA ticket. Is there anyway to upgrade? What about lounge access? I am NZ Elite if it matters.

Not possible (although it is possible to upgrade UA flights ticketed by NZ with UA upgrade instruments)
