KLM Baggage

Hi, I have a flight to Sapporo from Edinburgh via Amsterdam and Osaka in Feb. The Osaka to Sapporo leg is via ANA. The rest is KLM. We want to take snowboard bags with us.

I asked KLM via thier Facebook messenger facility what the cost is and how I book the luggage.

KLM told me to speak to ANA about the Japan leg which is fair enough... However...

Twice now I've received the reply that they cannot tell me the price for the KLM legs, that I should ask at the airport and I'll be told the price if they can decide to accept it.

Clearly this is unacceptable how can they expect me to go on a snowboard trip without knowing if my luggage will be accepted until I get to the airport.

A snowboard bag + boot bag together counts as one piece of luggage. Simply buy extra luggage (assuming you will also take regular luggage and have no extra allowance) and show up at the airport to check it in; you do not need to pre-arrange it (other than buying extra allowance if applicable). You will need to bring it to odd-size baggage after having the check-in agent attach a tag. ANA should have a similar policy, though I have no experience with them myself.

Btw if you are staying in Osaka for a bit rather than going on to CTS immediately, you may also use JAL's luggage transfer service. They'll send your snowboard bag to anywhere in Japan for a reasonable price -- you can have it delivered to where you're staying instead of carrying it yourself: https://www.jalabc.com/english/

I did this with skis earlier this year and thought it was perhaps the best idea I've ever had; instead of lugging a pair of skis through Tokyo and Sapporo, I had them delivered and they were waiting for me at the lodge when I got there.
