And note that the European awards (presumably on the entire AF/KL network - though perhaps not UX as this is listed separately) can be booked for travel up to 26 March of next year! Nice development.

Nice development indeed! Although the discounts are lower than the usual on-sale destinations, presumably now more destinations will be eligible.
For anyone who is wondering what Europe 1, 2 or 3 is:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/flyin...e-1-2-3-a.html
So in theory one could fly AMS-TLV for 22K miles roundtrip

Deleted.
The "no connecting flights in Europe" rule is still in force - so my stated, longer, example involving a connection would not be charged as a single journey.

I mostly find the European promo-awards confusing. Is it half price for all direct flights within Europe between 1/11 and 26/3 if I read it correctly? If so why sub-divide each band into 3 periods? And indeed, why make it economy only and what is the impact on further 'bands' which are the expensive ones and to Business which is the outrageous one?

If you check the website, you will see that the booking dates for the Valencia offer are between 30/10/2012 and 29/12/2012. So check again in 15 days' time.

Interesting destinations. I have a question: can you change classic awards for promo awards? I'm going to Cuba at the end of the month in PV. The return in November is cheaper in miles in C than in Y+ using the promos. I would like to keep award on 27 oct because flight is full but change return using klm or ux. Is this possible? Can fb customer service help with this to do it before I leave?

From KLM:
You may cancel or modify a Classic Award; however a fee of € 45 will be charged.
This can be risky. The best way to do this:
a) do nothing until the Promo Award becomes bookable.
b) Check if there is a Promo Award available for the dates you want. If so, book it immediately.
c) only when your Promo Award is booked, should you request your Classic Award to be cancelled.
For this to happen, of course, you have to have enough miles in your account to book the additional award before having the miles for the Classic Award refunded.
Note that it may take some time for the Classic Award miles to be refunded, in which time availability for your Promo may disappear.
So exercise caution or you may end up having to book your Classic Award all over again - or worse, you might find only Flex Awards left!!!
Your case may be more complex, given that you have a return award. A good rule of thumb is to always book awards as two separate one-ways, where this is possible (not possible to book a one-way FB award to the US if you are not a US resident; not possible to book one-ways on all FB partner airlines). This gives you the maximum flexibility (though, of course, if you need to cancel, it does mean you have to pay the cancellation fee twice).

There could be a workaround by buying miles, then exercicing the droit de rétractation. Although I don't know if they would honour it if those miles are burned then refunded.

Thank you for your help. Actually having to do it after my departure to Cuba worries me for two reasons.
1) Contacting FB will be difficult and expensive.
2) Immigration issue when leaving on a different flight than the one declared.
I guess it is just too risky (again I have a RT for 2 people on one reservation booked with miles from 2 accounts).
