One can pay for extra-leg seats on domestic flights. Is that impossible on European flights?

Yes, it is possible also, but unless I'm mistaken you don't pre-assign them at the time of purchase but only at check-in.

Flying CDG-DUS in J. Up until two weeks ago I had a J seat assigned on AF website. The seatmap now disappeared completely.

is this normal?

no. Likely a glitch. Did you look on KL site ? Or on AF apps (phone, tablet) ?

Seat selection on short haul via the "manage my booking" is available only until 30-48 hours before the flight, not sure exactly when is the cut off time. Then from 30 hours before, you can select/change seat via the check-in process. When is your flight to DUS?

Probably an aircraft change. It happens to me every time there is one. Sometimes the new seat map shows on the KL website before the AF one.

OP is flying in C, so advanced seat selection has always been possible.

According to a post in the Delta forum, it's now possible to book seats in advance for intra-European flights:

One moderator should really rename this thread since it's not a come back. If I knew the silly OP who did that ...

These threads are indeed confusing.
As someone who will be flying a lot in France/Europe in the summer months, could we get a summary of the current state of affairs for Y seat assignments?
