OT: US Military using Jetsgo call signs in Europe
From todays Sunday Times:
US military planes operated an "extraordinary rendition" (CIA terrorist suspect transport) flight across Europe shortly after another landed using a call sign assigned to a civilian airline. The flights were filed with ATC using the call sign "JGO" which is still assigned to the former Canada airline, Jetsgo.
Further, the registration and type of the aircraft originally filed has subsequently changed on more than one occasion. Amnesty International has suggested this is as "US security authorities were engaged in a covert operation to ferry arms to Rwanda in the face of political opposition from the EU". The implication seems to be that to initially file the flight as say a C130 would generate more questions than if it was a small Learjet.
A spokesman for ICAO said "Our records indicate that the designator JGO is still assigned to Jetsgo and the ICAO does not assign the same code to two operators"
Storm in a teacup, or cause for concern if civilian and military flights could be confused when overflying or near to certain airspace?.
