Aeroplan Reward - Change segment from J to F when available

Flying from HND to YYZ via FRA. If I book a first class reward and the HND-FRA is in first but LH isn't showing any F availability yet for YYZ-JFK (then JFK-YOW), can I book an AC or LH J trip and if a few days out the F segment is available I can pay the $75 plus LH fees to switch to F, since I'm on an F fare anyways?

You dont need to pay a change fee, at least you didnt have to before the recent devaluation.

But yes, LH metal Air Canada scamfees will apply.

Right, if YOUR flight opens up O space, you can call and change for free.

For any AC operated flights, you can also be added to the onload list on day of departure (if it's not done automatically - that seems to be happening now under certain unknown circumstances) if it doesn't open up beforehand.

YYZ-JFK and JFK-YOW don't have F cabins - just J.
Note also that AC is ending its flights to JFK from April 3rd.

??? AC ended flights to JFK long ago. It must have been at least one year since AC last flew to JFK.

I would switch my trip to be from AC J FRA-YYZ-YOW to something like LH F from FRA-IAD or JFK and then connect J to YYZ-YOW. That would be the plan. I'm well aware that it means a likely U.S. connection, but that entails F lounge in FRA and a nicer TATL flight.

Check FRA-DTW/PHL - usually good routes for F awards on LH <14 days out.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was beginning to second guess exactly why I was flying AC into EWR instead. Glad to see I didn't mis something really obvious.

I miss those JFK flights. They were so convenient for me to connect onto OZ, BR, SQ, NH, TK, etc. Perhaps that's why AC ended them.

From YVR, there's always CX. Red eye though.
