Aeroplan Taxes & Fees Huge Compared to Air Canada
The taxes, fees and surcharges for Aeroplan flights are many times higher than exact equivalent Air Canada flights. On a return flight Calgary - Tel Aviv Aeroplan wants $699 for taxes, fees and surcharges versus $99 for Air Canada, same flights on same dates. Apparently, this is because Air Canada charges Aeroplan a fuel surcharge of $600. What a rip job. Is there some way to get this reduced?

Welcome Walt, this has been discussed ad nauseum and beaten to death. I guess one more thread on this topic will make a difference, maybe AE will capitulate and remove all scam charges.

Actually they are the same. When pricing on aircanada.com, the surcharges are shown in the fare portion.

This is called YQ scam charges. The way to avoid this is to use Aeroplan to book on *A for carriers that do not charge YQ. Try flying on United via one of their hubs and you will see the price drop a lot.

YQ is included in "taxes" when booking via Air Canada.
YQ (here known as scamcharge) is not included on points tickets (for most partners) - your Aeroplan points only cover the base fare - the rest of the money is scammed by Air Canada
