Ask the other airlines for a status match challenge. If they offer it, fly with them. This trip alone should get you status or very close to it.

J on the EK 77W is a complete joke at 2-3-2. Avoid it.

If there's no reasonably priced *A option I'd go for Etihad.

Status match's are uncommon. A challenge is the best you can hope for. AA offer a status challenge for which QF is eligible, but EY is not eligible. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/ameri...challenge.html
One trip only is nothing to an airline:- that's not frequent flying or frequent spending (as many ffp's are morphing into)

I earned AA Gold on a single one-way Asia-NA itinerary. And with the challenge I paid for, it actually earned me Platinum.

Sure, it's not "frequent", but that doesn't mean you can't get a decent mid-tier status out of one trip.

Flying YYZ-YVR-HKG in J RT is enough to qualify for P25K. Getting AA gold on Asia-NA one way is impressive though.

I'll look up which of these airlines are *Alliance - which is bonus to my AP account.

Recommendations?

(All seats are business class)

Option 1:
YYZ-LAX on AirCanada A321 (flight AC799)
9 hr layover in LAX
LAX-MEL on Qantas A380 (flight QF94)
Total journey time: ~30 hours

Option 2:
YYZ-Dubai on Emirates A380 (Flight EK242)
8 hr layover in Dubai
Dubai-MEL on Emirates 777-300er (Flight EK408)
Total Journey time: ~36 hours

Option 3:
YYZ-Abu Dhabi on Etihad 777-300er (Flight EY140)
10 hr layover in Abu Dhabi
AbuDabi - MEL on Etihad A380(flight EY460)
Total Journey time: ~37 hours
As other posters have noted only AC is *A.

I do YYZ-OZ 6 times a year,being doing it since 2003.

With 30 hours of flight time, every additional hour feels like 10 additional hours.
I always take the non-stop from West coast to OZ.

For MEL. It is LAX-MEL on UA or QF.

For SYD. It is LAX-SYD or SFO-SYD. First choice United. There have been times when UA is not available my second choice QF even though *A is the only alliance I have status with.

If the above are the 3 options go with AC/QF. From LAX-MEL is only 7900x2=15,800. IMHO, not worth adding 10+ hours for RT.

Joke? TK also flies 2-3-2 and offers a great product...

If 2-3-2 is a joke, what do you call 2-4-2 haha

YYZ-LAX (and back) on an A320 significantly detracts from this option IMO.

AC uses a 763 on one of its daily YYZ-LAX flights with pods in J.

Talking tell your BOSS you are going for $2750 in Business class.

Buddy, you dont want to fly an AC 320 to start your flight, and at the price of the flights below, your boss will encourage you to go to SYD again. aeroplan miles are useless crap, that means you are tricked into flying AC.

Also after Trump announcements today, just fly over USA.

if you get a challenge offer, Round Trip YYZ-MEL will be enough for Gold level.

Update:

I booked option 1, but instead of YYZ-LAX on an Air Canada airbus, I took an earlier flight on the AC Dreamliner with pods. So, I have a few extra hours in the Qantas lounge.

OK Thats good.
Now as this is Flyertalk, what frequent flyer program will you put the trip to? (Do not join the QFF)

I joined AAdvantage just to get the Qantas miles from LAX-MEL, return. Of course, the YYZ-LAX is earning me Aeroplan.

I believe business class on Qantas earns x 1.25 AA miles. Not sure if this will result in anything worthwhile.

Wheretocredit has a calculator function. Punch in your route, airline and fare class and it'll spit out all possible earnings sorted in descending order

Assuming you're on a D fare, Alaska would earn you 33k miles (of which 18k is elite qualifying)

Banking to AA gets you 18k elite qualifying and redeemable miles
