AC's 777 fleet is equipped with a complete ADS-B suite (transmitting on 1090MHz and over sat-link), as well as ACARS.
You can buy a $10 USB dongle (called a "RTL-SDR") and hook it to your computer to listen to the transmissions (using a program such as adsb# or dump1090). I even have some software that plots the real-time position of AC (and various other carrier) overflights on a map. The plane transmits a signal every couple of seconds with a real time position update.
ADS-B is different from ACARS, in that, it transmits real-time position updates. While ACARS is just maintenance messages typically, sometimes clearances, etc. Often coded messages.

I can't wait until NA moves to ADS-B when NextGen is implemented.
