Buying cigarettes for gift at JNB

I have never bought cigarettes before and was shocked to see that a carton costs about $ 60 at Costco.

Would it be cheaper to buy it duty free onboard AA or BA or at Terminal 5 at Heathrow or on arrival at JNB?

I am buying it as a request for someone in JNB which essentially will be a gift.

Depends on what brand you want to buy. More then likely on arrival at JNB would be cheapest.

When I used to smoke, I found that buying smokes at JNB was the cheapest option for me. I used to stock up on my outbound flights, and then, on arrivals. That would see me through until my next trip.

As long as your friend does not want a certain difficult to find brand, JNB should be your best option.

Costco in Orange County - ~ $60
AA onboard ~ $37
LHR duty free ~ £ 40
BA onboard ~ £ 30
JNB dutyfree arrival ~ $ 29

I bought a Marlboro carton of 200. A 400 carton was ~$ 54.

Just to add that if you were shocked about the Costco price of $60, it's just as well you didn't go airside at LHR, where a carton of Marlboro would cost you around $140

Indeed! Makes me glad I stopped all those decades ago. (Although cost of purchase is still the least of reasons!)
