"Impossible to upgrade on Star Alliance"
I have been trying for several weeks now, to use A3 miles to upgrade a US-domestic flight from coach to either economy-plus or first (UA operated).
The consistent answer from their hotline for a few weeks now is "we are upgrading our IT system, check back in a week or so"
The very polite lady today on the hotline said "it is only possible to do that upgrade on the internet. But I checked with our technician, he has no idea when that will be ready"
Anyone who has an idea how to exercise that right to upgrade?? Otherwise those A3 miles are really stranded for me!

You also need to be clear what you're asking for. To upgrade, you need (a) to be in a very high fare class initially and (b) there needs to be award space in the cabin you're upgrading to.
*A does not have award availability in Y+ - specifically in the case of UA that's just a paid upgrade from Y irrespective of fare bucket. You will only find award space in Economy (no use to you), Business (some coast-to-coast US flights have this) and First.

I tried to ug B fares on OZ, US (when they were *A) with UA, LH, and SQ miles, and on SQ with LH and UA miles and the online process.
Not once did I succeed. So I am now firmly convinced that the ug scheme is a mere marketing scam much akin many of the other *A benefits.
Get an award, don't wast time and effort on this *A ug nonsense!

Domestic upgrade space in the USA can be pretty rare depending on the route and a general waste of miles
Your required to be in the right bucket AND for the airline to have released upgrade inventory
I just upgraded (y->c) a work trip from SYD->BKK using UA miles, and it worked just fine
I did it at t-24(hours) when thai opened up the fare buckets for upgrades and it went through on the spot

Many thanks for the advice. Guess I am left with HUCA because the Amadeus page quoted above just crashed on me...
In any case, I have readjusted my expectation that probably I'll be flying coach + the miles will indeed become stranded...

Using M&B miles to upgrade *A partner flight
Hi All,
Had a slightly confusing experience earlier today, I rang Aegean M&B about using ~60K of my M&B miles to upgrade an Air New Zealand Premium Economy booking to Business (SFO-AKL on 77W).
Now, when I spoke to Air New Zealand first, the fare class for my booking was "A", which according to them qualifies for upgrade using other *A partner airlines's miles etc.
So when I rang M&B, the agent, who despite being the most courteous person I have ever spoken to, was adamant that only U, E, O, Y and B fares can be upgraded on Air NZ tickets.
In the scheme of things my A class booking fare slots in after O, and is much higher than Y & B (economy) fares - I've even checked earning rates here, as per Air NZ agent to validate that A class earns more than Y & B, so is deemed "upgradeable" - according to Air NZ agent.
In light of all this, what should I do? I know I'm right, Air NZ says I am, Aegean M&B says I'm not. My flight is in 4 weeks, there are still some upgrade seats according to EF, so I'm very keen to get this sorted ASAP.
Would appreciate advice from the experienced FTers here on how to persuade Aegean agent to process the upgrade.
Cheers,
CB

Using M&B miles for upgrade on SQ
Hello
As the title says, does anyone know whether *G upgrades on SQ are possible using M&B miles? I read on an age-old post that Aegean doesn't allow miles-based upgrades for a number of airlines, including SQ and TG, but I couldn't find that information on their site anywhere.
Also, what is SQ upgrade availability like? I'd be looking to upgrade from Y to J.
Update: went through the Aegean T&C's; upgrade not allowed on SQ and TG

Maybe HUCA? Ask to speak to a supervisor?
As per the website T&C, only U, E, O, Y, B are eligible for upgrades. Maybe try to downgrade your ticket and then try to upgrade? Technically, it seems like Aegean is in the right!
Will be following this one since I may be interested in something similar

You are using Aegean miles to upgrade, so you are bound by their rules.
That Air NZ tells you that Star Alliance upgrades may happen from class A is only half the story - not every Star Alliance program is identical, so not all programs will allow upgrades from NZ A.
As it happens, the Aegean T&Cs are crystal clear: you can upgrade to Business from Economy Class only, or upgrade to First from Business Class only. No upgrades from Premium Economy on any airline.
For Air NZ, the only allowable upgrades are:
Economy → Business
U, E, O, Y, B
