NYT: Advenatures in E-Fare travel
If you want some "light" reading: good article in the New York Times BUSINESS Section reviewing E-Fares.
The interesting thing is the three kinds of travelers who generally book e-fares:
*Separated Lovers.
*People going to see long-distance relatives for the weekend.
*Couples looking for a little adventure in their lives.
I don't know how many of us have used e-fares. ON my schedule the only way to take advantage of them is IF I have to get away and IF I can get the time off on two days notices (which is impossible in my job!)

E-fares are the last minute specials that the major airlines post on their websites (or by e-mail if you sign up) on Tuesday/Wednesday for travel the coming weekend (usually departing Saturday/Sunday returning Monday/Tuesday).
Because you only get a couple of days warning, you can not use these for trips planned out much in advance obviously, leading to why only certain groups are finding them all that useful.
My girlfriend has used a United E-Fare once when she needed to go home one weekend when her mother was in the hospital, and by luck United had an E-Fare she could use.

...prior to our 4 yr old being born, my wife and I would have fallen into your category #3. That was pre-Efares, so we would find ourselves in San Antonio on Fri night and standing in the airport @ SAT saturday afternoon trying to decide on Vegas or Nawlins (choosing New Orleans because it was the next flight).
The only time I've used them is by accident. My wife and son needed to leave Sat, return Tue and CO just happened to offer the fare, the route, the dates...
