upgrades less red tape than free tkts?

I'm wondering whether anyone has had experience suggesting that it's easier to get an upgrade than book a free seat. I'm working on a story about it, and would appreciate stories from you expert travelers. Can those with stories email me at [email protected] and send me a number where I could reach you for an interview?

Hi Julie,
I've recently had just the opposite experience. I was arranging the travel for a speaker to come from Houston to Honolulu. He was trying to upgrade on CO, but didn't have any luck. However, he could book two first class award seats and bring his wife with no problem. I guess CO missed out on some revenue.
