number of first-class-seats on 3-class aircrafts

"my" UA-people in Zurich told me that the middle-seat in the back of the first-class (at least on transatlantic-3class-flights) is never avilable for reservation (they can't book that seat). It is reserved for the crew (captain). I am surprised. Is this the case on other airlines too (no wonder first class-seats on awards are often sold out)?

To begin with there are very few first class seats. Based on personal experience I suspect that airlines will prefer to overbook and oversell business class seats rather than give away first class FF seats. I also suspect that the same holds for business class ie they will prefer to oversell coach seats and then bump people from coach to business rather than give business FF awards if there is a high demand for coach. Does anyone from InsideFlyer have any information on how business/first seats are allocated for frequent fliers?

I think the important question here is how the Captain can see the runway from the rear of the first class cabin.

I too would like to know how first class award seats are allocated. Calling too early, 6-7 months will not guarantee you a FF award ticked in 1st, even if NO ONE in booked on that flight. It doesn't seem right.

For the past two and one future partner-award-trip 1998 with flexibilty I succedded always. The first one was even on Superbowl-Sunday: but instead of flying to SAN I had to land in SNA (ZRH-IAD-SFO on international first, SFO-SNA on first, from Orange County we took a car). For the last one, in Nov/Dec 98 instead of ZRH-Frankfurt-IAD-SFO I had to take ZRH-Brussels-SFO and back (with a DEN stopover).
