No electric toothbrush or hot roller clips in carryon?
I made reservations today for a rt ATL/DCA and casually asked the CTO agent if my electric toothbrush and hot rollers would be a problem. Then she called someone, who apparently told her the rollers were ok, but no clips or toothbrush. Nowhere can I find a specific mention of these items, and can't believe that no one has made it through security with them. I never check a bag, but don't want to get into it with the Argen-not-so-brights and miss my flight. Any ideas or suggestions?

I have carried my electric toothbrush on at least 6 times since 9/11 and have not had a problem. The floriscope people usually recognize it, only 1 has opened my bag to look at it.

Speaking of electric toothbrushes, checking them might cause more problems. My sister had an electric toothbrush in her checked luggage on US. Well, it came on when the baggage handlers were loading it on the plane (Express Flight, PIT). They called her over to the podium and she told them what it was (they probably thought it was something else). The agent retrieved the luggage and my sister turned it off. Everyone boarded the plane but the pilot had a fit over the luggage incident. The pilot refused to fly the plane. Everyone had to deplane and the luggage was removed. The agent and the pilot were arguing about the contents of the luggage. The only way the pilot would fly was if bomb sniffing dogs and the police were called in. The dogs came and sniffed the luggage. Nothing was found. The pilot was satisfied. After an hour delay, the plane was on its way.

I've carried on my electric toothbrush (sonicare) on about 20 flights since 9/11 without incident. Passed through security in AUS, IAH, ATL, and SFO with it.
dknn's toothbrush incident reminds me of a line from Fight Club.

I also can confirm that I have successfully carried electric toothbrush through these airports since 9/11, just off the top of my head:
SFO SJC OAK DIA IAH EWR FLL NAS SRQ TPA AMS BRU CMH YYZ JAX LAS PHX TUS AUS CDG
Never any problems at all, anywhere. I don't think you'll have a problem.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't see a problem either, but you never know what low paid twisted minds are thinking. She said the roller clips could be used to stab someone because they're metal.

Not all electric toothbrushes are the same. Some models, such as Sonicare, don't have a disposable battery - others do have batteries. The problem may be more wit the models with removable batteries.

No electric toothbrush incident to report, but this morning at SDQ, I had my tweezers confiscated and had to dispose of all my Mach3 disposible razor blades (including the one in my razor).
Guess I'll be looking a little rough around the edges tomorrow morning.

Here is script from that part of the movie ..
---------
---------
Utterly empty of baggage, and, except for Jack and a SECURITY TASK
FORCE MAN, utterly empty of people; quiet. The Security TFM, smirking,
holds a receiver to his ear from an official phone on the wall.
SECURITY TFM (to Jack)
Throwers don't worry about ticking. Modern bombs don't tick.
JACK
Throwers?
SECURITY TFM
Baggage handlers. But when a suitcase vibrates, the throwers have to
call the police.
JACK
My suitcase was *vibrating*?
PG 29
SECURITY TFM
Nine times out of ten, it's an electric razor. One out of ten, it's a
dildo. Sometimes it's even a *man*. It's airline policy not to imply
ownership in the event of a dildo. We gotta use the indefinite
article: "*A* dildo". Never "*Your* dildo".
JACK (V.O.)
I had everything in that bag. Six white shirts, two black trousers,
six pair underwear, alarm clock, contact lens stuff, and ... cordless
electric razor.
SECURITY TFM (into phone)
Yeah? Oh, ****, now a recording.
The Security TFM punches a few code numbers into the phone, waits. CUT
TO:
EXT. EMPTY RUNWAY - NIGHT
A solitary SUITCASE sits on the concrete.
KABOM! The suitcase explodes. CUT TO:
INT. BAGGAGE CLAIM AREA - RESUMING
The Security TFM still on hold, entertains Jack.

You can bring sonicare on plane
http://apps.tsa.dhs.gov/mytsa/cib_results.aspx?src=tsadotgov <-- this is a link to TSA's website for acceptable items to bring on board. Type in Sonicare (or anything else you are curious about) and it will tell you whether an item is "carry-on", "check-in", or both permissible.

My Sonicare has gone through security with me scores of times in the last decade in several different countries, and there was only one incident (with the TSA) where the agent had to open my suitcase and see what it was-- obviously an inexperienced x-ray operator caused this.

By resurrecting a thread from just 5 months after 9/11, you have reminded me about the time when almost everyone panicked over everything. There was not even a TSA when this was started and we were still afraid of nail clippers. There were still armed soldiers in the airport (there were report the guns were not loaded) and many people were afraid of everyone.
Some things have gotten better. A lot of individual irrational fear has disappeared.
Sadly, it has been replaced by institutionalized irrational fear.
Oh, well.
