Post Qantas or Ansett FFP - which is better??

Somewhere in this forum, ffhound mentioned that for 30K you can redeem one-way travels to Aust. cities (up to 11,000 km) from Qantas or Ansett FFP.

Which is better? Qantas or Ansett FFP? I know you have to pay for these FFPs & they are with 1w & star respectively.

How extensive are their airline & hotel partners? I can't seem to get info on Ansett website.

What are their restrictions / disadvantages on earning miles? I heard they had some peculiar rules on residency & discount fares.

Ansett has one airline partner on its plus side, at least for me - MAS. MAS has one of the cheapest fares in this side of the world. I accrue domestic miles in Enrich but put international miles in Swissair.

But Ansett hotel, car & other partners, I am not sure. Can someone care to reply??

Cool

Don't quote me on thus but...

Qantas - Why?

1. The food is better
2. More destinations to redeem to (eg Vanuatu)
3. Less points needed to redeem for business class trip round Australia.

Only downside is the annual fee.

cheers Peter

Thumbs up

Both are great, but agree with ffhound- Qantas by a hair (Ansett always loses my luggage!)

Doc - Glad to hear it is not just me that AN looses luggage with.

Agree with FFhound, AN compared with QF the checkin staff are rude, food is digusting (although little good can be said about QF's quiche!). Also AN are in no-man's land due to the abandoned sale of 50% of the airline to SQ or NZ. They have an owner in NewsCorp that does not want them and they desparately need cash to rehaul their fleet and expand services.

Until that happens QF will continue to have the jump and their fleet will continue to run down and they will continue to make a loss.

As both have tier credits (yuk!) and if an an Australian based programme is what you want then QF would be the go.

Kal - it depends on where you are based and what your needs are. Unless you are based in Australia, you would not be able to accrue any miles (or kilometers as in the case for the Aussie programmes here), on MH or SQ. Besides on AN, you will only get 70% of the mileage on certain types of fares.

As far as I know on Ansett's programme, since they joined STAR, the rewards on sticking to this programme has taken a nosedive. There are no oneway awards to Australia available. Oneways can only be taken FROM Australia and only onto Ansett International's destinations, which are just, HKG, TPE and KIX.

The only advantage to Ansett's programme over Qantas is the car rental agency's tie-in on dollar spent for miles. AVIS will award 5 points per every AUD$1 spent on car rentals worldwide.

Hope this helps.
