Qantas to cancel all Canada services

This might impact on you guys, as it possibly means AC will add services to take up the slack?

Qantas profit drops 22%. Big job cuts.

``We have three major competitors in the domestic market with the start up of Impulse and Virgin, and Ansett being absorbed into the foreign owed grouping of Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines.''

He said some poorly performing international services would be suspended, the first being all services to China and Canada.

He said other route suspensions would be announced shortly.

There goes our cheap fare on AC to HNL and SYD, AC used to match QF sale for sale to HNL and sometimes SYD.

Any word on when they will start cancelling it?

Expedia shows that QF have a fare on sale between Feb 24 - Feb 28 for YVR-HNL for an unbelivable $369!! Interesting the fare basis is VREDCAN1.

Not entirely surprising. The front cabin seemed to be empty on the flights and I think it was a very heavy mix of VFF traffic. The heavy bookings I saw in December appeared to be heavy skiier traffic.

Air Pacific is still in the market and I could see QF codesharing as QF does hold an interest in FJ.

The C$417 fare (once you add tax) would make a nice run as you really have to stay 2 nights). 4k Q-miles (on AA) and 4k elite bonus doesn't make it worthwhile though.

HNL was cheap long before Qantas entered the marked. Hopefully it won't make too much difference.

Unfortunately it's cheap only if you fly on TS, Canada 3000 and Royal. Those 3 are not renown for comfort. Air Pacific might keep the market cheap as far as scheduled service goes.

Remember QF cancelled its 3 flights/week between YYZ-HNL-SYD a few months ago and started channeling people on AA codeshares through LAX and onto nonstops to SYD, MEL and AKL. As Terenz notes, if the front cabin full fare traffic isn't there, then relying on discounting in the back is not going to make for a profitable route.

Not true. In the past two months I've been able to buy unrestricted J class tickets for YYZ-HNL-YYZ on AC for an average of $2300. That's a bargain.
