Maybe the airlines figured that it was not profitable to have a route like that since most of the passengers are leisure-travelers and therefore would be flying on discounted fares.
I too would like to see a non-stop from the West Coast to ACA. However, I don't think that is going to happen anytime soon. Plus, I think a lot of people would prefer to fly to Hawaii instead of Mexico just because Hawaii has a more "exotic" flavor to it.

You could fly HP to ACA through PHX-- actually, they have a $249 promo now on their website.
My hunch is one of 4 reasons:
1. Most people from CA are going to Los Cabos, Mazatlan, Ixtapa, and Puerta Vallarta now instead of all the way down to ACA.
2. Alliances make it more efficient for airlines to serve MEX and codeshare. i.e. UA/MX and DL/AM, if the handful of AM ACA-MEX flights carry the DL code, this offers passengers more potential departures through to DFW and ATL than if they flew a single ATL-ACA flight. Figure that DL would fly a few ACA-MEX flights a day anyways, and they just add 10 or so DL passengers.
3. Charter flights??? From the midwest, anyway, far more people fly to Mexico on charters than on scheduled airlines.
4. No one picked up DL's old route. I remember in about 1997 when DL did LAX-MZT nonstop, too. They probably dropped it because of reason #2 above: they fly LAX-MEX a few times a day between DL and AM aircraft, all with the DL code.
