Currently, at least according to the websites of UA and DL, you can still earn UA miles on DL and vice versa.
I would expect this benefit to disappear given the new line ups of UA/US vs. DL/CO/NW. Has this been officially announced or otherwise talked about?

Well, as of last Wednesday, I was able to fly on Delta and have the miles applied to my United account. (so at least we have confirmation that it still can be done.) I don't normally fly Delta, nor do I frequent their board to know if it has been discussed.

Actually, I flew on a UA flight a year and a half ago, got the DL miles, and they counted towards elite status. Now that I have converted to UA from DL (or Smelta as I call them now), I was hoping to earn UA base miles if I HAD to fly Smelta for some reason (I live in ATL).

Thanks for the replies. WashingtonIBMer, it is good to have confirmation at least that this still is active.
FYI, elite qualification is of no concern to me right now since I don't fly enough to gain status on any airline. And since my primary airport is non-hub it makes concentrating on any single airline even further irrelevant when taking price and connections into account. Therefore my strategy for my 6 or so flights a year is to focus on HHonors transferability.
As has been reported, Delta will no longer transfer to HHonors effective 3/1/03. So I will want to earn a transferable carrier's miles when flying DL. Currently, that is UA. If the shakeout goes as we are conjecturing, that will change to CO, which is somewhat unfortunate, as CO is slow with the x-fer process and DL has always been very fast. (NW doesn't participate in HHonors Reward Exchange.)
I'll be keeping an eye out for any official announcements, and hope at least that airport staff are somewhat aware of changes when they occur (though that often isn't the case).

<font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="2">Hello Rut Dog,
Thank you for contacting us.
You can earn miles in a Delta or US Airways account when taking a flight on United. Adding US Airways as a new partner does not change the partnership with Delta.
Feel free to contact us again if you have any questions.
Thanks for choosing United Airlines and Mileage Plus!</font>

You are so very welcome! It is good to be able to contribute something of value to this board. Sort of "pays" for all of the good ideas I have received from so many others! Thank YOU.
