Air NZ reports 27% jump in domestic RPKs for October
Air New Zealand (ANZ) recorded a 27.3% jump in RPKs from domestic services in October but international demand remained weaker.
The Star Alliance carrier says the strong domestic RPK increase far exceeded a 13.7% increase in domestic ASKs, helping lift passenger load factor by 8.2 points to 77.3%. The number of passengers carried on domestic routes increased 25.5%, to 497,000.
ANZ attributes the sharp increase in traffic to the revamp of its domestic product last year under the Express Class banner, under which business class was eliminated from all domestic flying.
International operations did not perform as well in October, however, and RPKs were down 2.6% on the same month last year. ASKs increased 5.1% and total passenger numbers were flat, at 296,000. Passenger load factor was down 5.5 points to 69.7%.
Overall traffic increased 0.5% in terms of RPKs while the number of passengers carried on both domestic and international routes increased 14.6%, to 793,000. Overall ASKs were up 6.1% and passenger load factor was down 3.8 points to 70.7%.
