March 15 (Bloomberg) -- Air Canada, the country's biggest airline, said it will lay off 145 mechanics, about 70 percent of its Calgary maintenance workers, because of slack demand from other carriers and the retirement of its Boeing 737 fleet.

From the Daily:
"Temporary layoffs in Calgary Heavy Maintenance announced. Air Canada Technical Services announced yesterday that the planned retirement of the B737’s in Air Canada’s fleet combined with continued worldwide business aviation challenges will result in temporary layoffs at the Calgary Base effective April 16. The move impacts about 150 IAMAW employees. The Base will continue to retain approximately 60 frontline employees, incorporating both line and heavy maintenance personnel, to continue ‘A’ and ‘B’ checks for ZIP and Air Norterra and to support line maintenance functions for Air Canada. “We do this with regret, but we also strongly believe that the Calgary base has a future in Air Canada Technical Services,” said Tech Services Vice-President, Aircraft Maintenance Ben Minicucci. “Our hope is that market conditions will improve in the industry soon, and we can again obtain significant third party work to ensure the continued sustainability and future of the Calgary base and its employees.” Calgary-based employees were advised yesterday of the decision"

Better yet, why not try to find the root cause of the business dropoff? The 737 is the most popular narrowbody airplane in the world. The 737 operators are getting their checks and overhauls done somewhere. Why aren't they coming to AC (I'll concede that the powerplant guys may not be ticketed on the next-generation engines)?
Note to Mr. Minicucci: In this industry, a rising tide does not necessarily lift all boats.
