Winglets on newer 737s?
Hi,
I'm brand new here, just found out about FlyerTalk recently.
As a Canadian & regular on AC & WestJet, I thought I'd post this on this section.
Why is it that some newer 737's (700s, 800's, 900's) have winglets and some do not?
I know that virtually every BBJ I have ever seen has them and on a recent trip to SYD, I noticed that Polynesian & Qantas both have them, yet most other airlines do not. I wouyld think winglet on most planes are a good idea, but why not all? Moreover, why just some new 737's? Is it a customer option only and/or range/fuel enhancing feature as well?
Thanks.

Off topic even for this forum but:
The winglets are optional. They are claimed to reduce noise and drag, thus increasing range by up to 5%. They probably are optimal for long haul flights. I don't think they were available for 737-700s when WS ordered its fleet and <4 hr flights may not pay for the cost and weight.
ATA is the only North American carrier using 737NGs with winglets.

Welcome, FMac!
Try this website out:

It takes a while to load up, and this first part seems like a movie trailer, but everything you want to know is on there!
