Air Canada Pilots Polled on Defensive Measures
Air Canada Pilots Polled on Defensive Measures
At its regular meeting in Vancouver this week, the Master Executive Council of the Air Canada Pilots Association (ACPA) reviewed the results of a membership poll on airline security measures. The poll was designed to elicit pilots' opinions on the impact of changes to airport and aircraft security measures introduced by government and industry; and, in particular, to determine the most effective method of securing the cockpit from potential terrorist attacks.
Poll results indicate that the majority of pilots at Air Canada favour a double door security system in the cockpit. "It's clear from the poll results that our pilots want a more secure cockpit environment than they have now", said ACPA's President Captain Don Johnson. "Our preferred solution is that all aircraft be equipped with a double-door system. There are products on the market now that could prevent or certainly foil any attempt to gain access to an aircraft cockpit. We understand these products are receiving good reviews by officials here in Canada and in the United States. We call on the government and the airline industry to begin a program immediately to switch to a double cockpit door system on all commercial aircraft in the country", Captain Johnson said.
The poll also asked whether arming pilots is a preferred method for securing the cockpit environment. While rejecting the idea of arming pilots with lethal weapons such as firearms, pilots are in favour, at least in the interim, of some defensive system inside the cockpit such as taser or stunning devices, until a more secure double-door system can be installed on all aircraft in the Air Canada fleet.

A friend who flies for a foreign airline has just undergone stun gun training.
This defensive measure has not yet been implemented while the legal ramifications are cleared up by the lawyers.
