I was pricing out fares YYC-SFO and noticed that you can get a low-ish fare on AC/UA that doesn't have a Sat stay requirement (it does have a two-day min stay, but that's fine for business).
When did this happen? I noticed that it's true for LAX as well...

There are a gazillion routes like this, with similar rules. In some cases, the cheapest Q fare has (for practical purposes) exactly the same rules as the Y fare -- i.e. available one-way, no advance purchase, etc.
That's why the claim that upgrade rules were "stingy-fied" because people buying last minute fares were paying top dollar and not able to upgrade, is bogus. Fact is, on many routes, particularly to the US, the "last minute fares" are the cheapest, or close to.

These fares have been around for a while on flights to the US. They are competitive with fares offered by US carriers.
What's even better is on selected routes on which AC competes with America West - very low (N class) fares available without a Sat. stay required and often with little advance booking required - I hope like crazy that America West's efforts to get rid of the Sat night stay requirement works.

bogus is right.
Domestic fares, Saturday night stay req'd.
US fares, No Saturday night stay.
Domestic fares, 50% q-miles
US fares, 100% q-miles
Domestic fares, no standby on L/Q fares
US fares, standby permitted on L/Q fares
Go ahead, someone try and argue that lack of competition in Canada isn't a root cause of us getting the shaft!
And Air Canada "competing" against itself with Tango, Jazz, Zip, Nip and Rip? Give me a break.

Also see www.zyworld.com/brancatelli/branc041802.htm (I'm sure Brancatelli had another column on America West more recently, but I can't find it now).
