Air Service in Providence, RI (PVD)

Does anyone here live in or frequent PVD?

My wife accepted a new job in Providence, and we'll be moving there in the next month. Incidentally, I too will be joining a new job. I won't have a traditional "brick-and-mortar" office, but will be traveling the globe to our various offices and sites.

SO air travel will be very important to me. If anyone lives here or uses this airport, I want to find out what the biggest airlines and their destinations are. This is most important to me, then I will decide how or if to get comp status, etc.

Most of my trips will be around the country, to Europe, and, occasionally, to Tokyo and Hong Kong.

From my trips to TF Green, it is hard to tell a truly dominant airline. US and SW seem to have the biggest presence. SW isn't global enough for me , so I ruled them out.

So, if you could, please, advice me to the biggest airlines and their destinations.

FWIW, I'm currently a DL Plat.

Hi, Rubin.

PVD is my home airport. US is the largest carrier, but all of the major airlines fly out of here.

Off the top of my head:

USAir - PIT,PHL,BWI,DCA,CLT,ALB,LGA
Continental - EWR,CLE,IAH
UAL - Chicago (O'Hare)
Delta - ATL,CVG
Northwest - DTW

I believe Delta Express and Metrojet have direct flights to Florida. Express flights also to all NYC airports.

For European flights, Boston has many direct routes. Traffic is terrible with the Big Dig, but I usually take the Bonanza bus from Providence (free parking, express lanes).

I hope this helps.

PVD used to be my home airport when I lived up in Framingham. Now that I fly back to Cambridge for work, I fly to PVD about half the time and BOS about half the time, depending on the fares.

I think Green is a fine airport, I just wish that they had space for airport club facilities.

American flies to ORD/LGA/JFK, and United flies to IAD as well as ORD.

I really enjoy flying out of PVD. A very nice airport.

I believe US has the best flight schedule.

CO would require a short hop to EWR where you can catch a connection to Europe.

WN has a lot of frequent flights to places like BWI. I'm not sure of other destinations.

FlierLie, I believe I heard a number of months back that Southwest surpassed US Airways in frequency (or at least seats) at PVD.

A few other points.
1) US has a double mile promo to LGA until the end of the year. You must register.
2) $88 to BWI, $150 to MCO
3) American flies 2 routes a) jets to Chicago b) Commuter to NYC
4) $98 to Islip Long Island
5) TF green is very easy to get in and out of.

I'd stick with Delta. It sounds like your other options are US and CO. Given the choice of DL, US, and CO - it's a no-brainer: DL. Add to that the fact that you're already Platinum and that cements it.

I agree with the others, PVD is great, but don't forget BDL (Hartford). Not all that far away, service from all/most major carriers, and pricewise, competetive, or better in some markets. Has UAL service direct/ns to SFO, which I find convenient. I happen to be (almost exactly) equidistant, so I can pick and choose...

Also don't forget ORH (Worcester), more and more airlines seem to be flying from it, although I haven't yet tried it.

The problem with Bradley for us Rhode Islanders is that there really is no decent way to get from Providence to Hartford.

I highly recommend PVD though. Even during the nastiest of delays, the airport has a stress free feeling about it. I think the triangular check in area is a wonderful use of space.

Read Consumer Reports from last month, it gave the airport great praise.
