I thought it was the norm to receive twice the number of HHonor points.

My Hilton Handbook indicates that 5,000 miles from participating airlines equals 10,000 HHonor points...

Its interesting reading this business wire which seems to have been written by a Hilton PR person. Note that the description of the AA program is brief, to the point and devoid of euphemisms. The Hiton description rambles on and on and is full of euphemisms. There was an earlier discussion in FlyerTalk where I think the conclusion was that Hilton's double dipping is not necessarily more generous than other programs which do not offer double dipping. The generosity of the Hilton program seems to be shrinking (elimination of VIP certificates, higher points needed for airline tickets, and recent stealth increases e.g. for casino chip award). While many hotel programs do not place limits on point expiration, Hilton has a lose it or use it policy for people who have not earned points in the past 12 months. I am happy that feature is "unmatched" by some of their competitors.

For me Reward exchange simply does not offer attractive conversion ratios in either direction (YMMV).

AAdvantage Joins HHonors Reward Exchange

American Airlines AAdvantage Program Joins Hilton HHonors Reward Exchange

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 7, 1999--Hilton HHonors(R), one of the world's leading guest reward programs, Monday announced that American Airlines(R), a long-time partner in the HHonors program, will now become the newest participant in the Hilton HHonors Reward Exchange.

Effective immediately, members may exchange American Airlines AAdvantage(R) miles for HHonors points and points for miles.

In celebration of this new alliance, joint program members will receive double the usual number of HHonors points for all miles-to-point exchanges through Aug. 31, 1999. For every 5,000 AAdvantage miles exchanged, travelers will receive 10,000 HHonors points instead of the regular 5,000 HHonors points.

The Hilton HHonors Reward Exchange is a unique feature of the HHonors program that offers travelers the industry's only two-way exchange of hotel points and airline miles.

American Airlines joins the growing list of airline partners participating in the Reward Exchange, which includes: Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, LanChile, LatinPass, Mexicana Airlines(R), Midwest Express Airlines, South African Airways, TWA(R) and United Airlines(R).

"We're delighted to announce the inclusion of the American AAdvantage program in the HHonors Reward Exchange. It's a great benefit that lets travelers consolidate their earnings to choose the rewards they want most," said Jeffrey Diskin, president and chief operating officer of Hilton HHonors Worldwide.

To exchange AAdvantage miles for HHonors points, travelers should contact American Airlines at 800/882-8880. To exchange HHonors points for AAdvantage miles, HHonors members may contact the HHonors Customer Service Center between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Central Daylight Time at 972/788-0878.

About the AAdvantage Program

AAdvantage, the industry's first frequent flyer program, was started in May 1981 to recognize and reward American Airlines' best customers. Today, the AAdvantage program operates worldwide and has 35 million participants and more than 70 airline, hotel, car rental and other service company participants.

About the Hilton HHonors Program

Hilton HHonors(R) is a guest reward program that gives frequent travelers a faster way to earn the rewards they want most. Enrolled members can earn HHonors points in addition to airline miles for every business-rate stay at more than 450 participating Hilton and Conrad International hotels around the world.

HHonors is the only hotel program that allows its members to simultaneously accumulate both airline miles and hotel points with each business-rate stay -- a benefit Hilton calls Double Dip(R) earnings.

Due to the unmatched flexibility, generosity and value offered by HHonors program features, as well as the many aggressive promotions that HHonors offers each year, the program has been recognized with numerous travel-industry awards.

According to InsideFlyer magazine, whose readers have praised Hilton HHonors for five consecutive years, the HHonors program has "chang(ed) the world of frequent travel" by "removing most of the limits on airline miles and points."

Membership in Hilton HHonors is free. Visitors to Hilton's Internet site at www.hilton.com can complete an online enrollment form by clicking HHonors on the home page. Or, to enroll instantly in the program and make reservations, consumers in the United States and Canada may also call 800-HILTONS. Outside the United States and Canada, travelers may call the Hilton Reservations Worldwide office in their area.

Travelers also may pick up an enrollment form with a temporary membership card at any participating Hilton or Conrad International hotel worldwide.

pgupta011 is absolutely correct...the headquarters for hilton is, i believe, beverly hills, which is where this story originates ...and this is nothing but a warmed-over press release.

if the story was actually written by a reporter, he or she has borrowed generously from the press release or the press conference or both.

I just checked the Hilton website. Apparently, American and Lan Chile are on a one to one exchange for miles to points. So, 5000 American miles equal 5000 points. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come for the other airline partners. A one to one exchange is unimpressive.

I will take advantage of the bonus offer though. I've got about 3,200 Advantage miles and I just called Diner's Club to transfer enough points to bring that up to the 5,000 miles necessary to receive the Hilton bonus. I can always use another 10,000 HHonors points.
