Spouse chucking my FFP mail!

I've been expecting some UA car and hotel certs in the mail based on a reward redemption I did several weeks ago.

I finally asked my wife if she had seen them, and sure enough she thought they were worthless (yeah, I know a lot of people on FT think that too) and round-filed them!

(Come to think of it, I haven't seen a Hyatt statement in a LONG time . . . )

Anyone else have to deal with this?

My wife has had the habit of opening my mail for a long time.

Some years ago, I told her I want to see all my mail, even junk mail.

She still opens my mail, but she does keep it all for me to see also.

Hey, you think you've got it bad...

I spent last Friday night with half the garbage can spread out in the garage, as the wife threw away my 2002 1k kit!

"I swear I put in the pile with the bills, I'm sure of it"

Luckily, my SWUs still look fine with some coffee grounds on the front.

Normally this would be a capital offense.

Fortunately for your spouse, UA is no longer sending these automatically with award redemtion, and are sending them by request now.

Just call the Mileage Plus Service Center.

This new policy is an indicator of just how "valuable" these certs have become.

The best solution (other than divorce, elimination, etc.) would be to rent a US Postal Service mailbox and have all your important mail go here. (Reminder, only the USPS can deliver to a PO Box so don't expect UPS, FEDEX, etc. to be able to deliver there).

My wife only opens mail addressed to her, I only open mail addressed to me. However, she will hover over me when I open a hand-addressed envelope from a female person she doesn't know....like when I trade coupons on FT with a woman.

Consider having certain items mailed to your office.

I just give in and go through the wastebasket near the desk after she gets on a go through the mail kick. It's easier then trying to explain that some of the stuff that has been in the tray for months that I haven't opended is really important and I need it, and I know exactly what it is and that is why I didn't open it.

I am much better at getting that stuff in a drawer quicker now.

I'll go one better. About 4 years ago I was travelling and during a typical phone call home, "how are you?, How are the kids?, anything in the mail". She told me the IRS refund check had arrived. Arrived home 3 days later and went thru the mail. No check. She tossed it out with the junk mail. Of course the trash had gone out and two long months later a reissued check arrived. We have new mail rules in place

I have a separate phone line and a separate mailing address. After years of living alone, I couldn't take it any other way.

Our rule is that junk is in the eye of the beholder, so don't throw it away. The singular exception is those dratted grocery store flyers - I've even tried bribing the postal carrier not to put those in my box .

I pay all our bills - so I grab them. Everything else goes on our respective desks..

And mileage addict - I, too, hover to see David open any hand-addressed envelopes

What is all this? If Him Indoors dared to open my mail, never mind deciding what was rubbish or not, he would be neutered tout de suite!

It sounds to me that you have some houses to be put in order. Why do your spouses go through post addressed to you? If our post says Mr and Mrs P. Galore then fine. I have noever opened his post, and he would never dream of opening mine. This is nothing that we imposed on each other, it was ever thus. He would never rummage though my handbag, nor I through his wallet.

Maybe that he remembers that I still have my mother's kitchen poker. She would never have stood for that either. So I ask you gentlemen, have you ever done the same to your wives?

I'm with you, pucci! It's a partnership -- not OWNERSHIP. In 26 years of marriage, I have NEVER looked in my spouse's purse. Even if I am asked to get something out, I hand her the bag and she gets it out. We don't open each other's mail. We have joint accounts -- one for each of us -- and they are private. Every couple has to make their own rules, I suppose, but ours work for us and they have always been unwritten. It is not a matter of hiding things but simply maintaining some independence, respect and personal sovereignty.
