5.000-15.000 extra points with United

I'm posting this to The Buzz since everyone on the United board probably already are enrolled in Mileage Plus.

If this is a well-known offer then please forgive this post (I'm a newbie).

I just joined Mileage Plus and there was an offer with my welcome mail:

You get 5.000 bonus points for every member who signs up on one of these applications (which where attached) if the member takes an international return flight before (some date - march 31 I think).

AND: The new member ALSO gets 5.000 points

If the travel is in business then it's 10.000 points and for First it 15.000points.

If interested - mail me

When I get these offers, I must confess that I have been tempted to just go over to the airport, and question people waiting in the appropriate airline's ticket line about whether they are members, and then hand them (with my FF number already filled out) to anyone who isn't and agrees to join. But I have never done it. Anyone?

How many people could you refer?

I would try to get to the airport and refer as many people as people. In just a few minutes you could have a free trip

My father told me that 'back in the old days', UA used to have a MP application in the UA Magazine (pre-Hemispheres days). On the form was a space to enter a referring member's name, so they could get X amount of bonus miles...

He used to fill in his MP# into the 3-4 applications per magazine and leave it on the flight.

He said it worked, and that he actually got a few hits and picked up several referral bonuses from prefect strangers.

MBS PremExec, I used to do the same thing back then with the same results (it was 5,000 per referal, I believe).

I then moved on to putting my bank account number on all the deposit slips at my local branch. And that's how I attained the vast wealth I enjoy today.

Goldlust do you have any kind of promo
code or source code on that application.
The reason I ask is that I signed up online
last nov. and I've taken 2 int. flights
allready. So I would like to call the
svc. center and see if they're willing to
give me and YOU the bonus.

Regards.

There is actually a record for that type of activity. In the days of the Pam Am WorldPass program someone actually did go out to the airport and hand out referrals to people standing in line at JFK. I think the number of miles that person earned according to one of the executives that I chatted with regularly with, was over 800,000 miles before they got wise to it.

Another great one was the same referral with the Marriott Rewards program. People would take all the front desk applications to their room, fill out the referral code box with their number abd return them to the front desk for the next person to take and use. Probably a couple million points went this way.

TWA and their referral program also had similar members doing what the Pam Am member did. Worth it? I can personally say yes.

Are these offers open to any member? I never seem to get these forms.

Yet with my website I think it would be not too hard to sign up some members. Is this a general promotion?

cheers Peter

Hey, don't laugh. I use to work at a bank, and with every deposit we told our people to check the name on the account online with the name of the depositor. So many people either come in for a starter pack and toss their deposit slips in the pile at the desk (starter packs don't have name and address) or write their numbers on the blanks.

Does anyone knows if you have to fly over the ocean in that time period as well to get the miles?

It doesn't have to be over the ocean as long as it's international.

I've been on vacation, but can add a short caution note here. I had a UA board member sign up a few friends before I left, via this promo (or it sounds like this one) as he too had these referral forms. Hope it works for those above, but please note the ones I saw qualified you both for bonus ONLY if using the higher booking class coach fares. Worth checking on that part of it before you go into it, as for It'l those can be double or treble a UA discounted W or V or Q fare etc.

Paul......any international trip, but note that the flyer whom you refer must 'complete' the return journey by 31 Mar 01, according to our local CTO. I would love a second opinion!
