Points with CA Vehicle Registration & Insurance
With my vehicle registration coming due in 2 weeks, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the California Department of Motor Vehicles recently started allowing its customers to charge their registration fees to credit cards – mileage earning credit cards.
The notice came in my renewal notice and one needs to renew online using a special, unique renewal identification number that that is listed on ones notice. With a considerable balance due this year, the $4.00 service fee for this convenient service will more than pay for itself in the frequent flyer miles that I’ll received when charging the cost of my registration.
In addition, when purchasing a home insurance policy last month at AAA, I also learned that one could charge the premium as well as the premium for car insurance on a mileage earning credit card as well.

Same here in Texas. Although :Vehicle owner agrees to pay by Visa or MasterCard, and agrees to pay a $2.00 online convenience fee and a $1.00 mail fee to cover the expense to mail the renewal sticker via the US Postal Service.

Oh, by the way, in NJ, there's no extra fee. It's clearly considered a net cost savings versus mailing and especially walk-up.
(You get your registration in 5 days, so the procrastinators who would normally need to go to DMV can just order online. Saves lots of bucks.)

afang- thanks for the link. neither dallas nor tarrent counties are on the list . perhaps they will be added later. i guess that i would spring for the extra $2 to use a credit card. i either mail it in or get it @ tom thumb, both of which charge the $1.... edit to say that tarrant is on the list.

rox I tried to sign up with AAA online last year..their website processed my CC and everything, however, after a few weeks, the AAA card came in the mail and it said that they had an error when they processed my CC. oh well. After that I just kinda gave up on them.
clacko I noticed that Dallas county is not on there...but i think Albertson's let you pay by CC.

In PA you can also pay you auto registration fee as well as your drivers license renewal fee online with a credit card. Sorry I don't have the website available.
I also pay my auto insurance with a credit card. I use AIG.

DMV CA has provided online renewal for a while now, but unfortunately to use it, you need to have an insurance from a provider that submits electronically to the DMV. The list of insurers that do this has grown somewhat since they started, but it's still limited. Mine's not on there yet, of course...
