Do any airlines allow elites to upgrade coach domestic free award tickets?

My understanding is that DL does not allow elite Medallions to upgrade coach class awards, but I seem to remember (but, could be wrong) that others do allow this. Does anyone know which airlines do??

Cheers.

United doesn't allow upgrading any Mileage Plus award.

USAir does, but only for $$ difference in the fare based upon the award ticket as if it were a Y fare

NW allows Plat/Gold to upgrade, and even to upgrade companion flying on coach award.

When looking into changing programs, I believe I read a rather tempting clause from NW that they allowed upgrades based on status for award tickets.

Hmmm if NW was not so bad on Customer Service and dependability.. I would really like their elite program... LOL!

David:
Are you sure CO allows this. I've received it one or two times when I beleive that the person checking me in did not notice it was a free ticket, but have been turned down and have seen other's flying of free tickets turned down when asking for the upgrade. In fact, I think it is in their program rules specifically that you can't upgrade a free ticket. It seems that they consider it "double dipping"

I believe that is one of the differences between OnePass and WorldPerks. You can upgrade for free on NW on award tickets, but not on CO... (see the 'elite' section on CO's web site, it specifically states on PAID fares only)
http://www.onepass.com/elite.htm

Still, not good enough for me to switch from primarily using CO OnePass to primarily using NW WorldPerks...

(I wonder if this will change when/if 'Wings' ever takes flight)

Vulcan: Every time I've had a coach award ticket on CO, if there was availability in first, I got an upgrade at ticketing or at the gate. I flew on quite a few domestic coach awards last year and always got the upgrade. It may not be in the rules, but it happens.

On Continental, nonelites can upgrade to first while on a free ticket of any kind within 2 hours of departure by paying a fee. The fee depends on the length of the flight.
