how often would they upgrade you from economy to first class?

hi

sorry if this has been posted before. what are some of you FTers' experiences who doesn't have Elite FF membership when asking for an upgrade to first class from an economy seat? if there are still plenty of first class seats available, they're entitled to say "NO" to you, right? it's just that it sucks for me to see those available first class seats not being sit on and go to waste. would it help to show up early at the gate counter and ask nicely? and is it better to ask for it at the counter where you check your bags or at gate counter? care to share??

ps: is there another thread/link that relates to this?

Ok people, seriously, what is the deal with this freeloader bludger attitude? If you ordered and paid for a Honda Civic at the local car dealer, would you expect him to provide you with an S-Class Mercedes, simply because there was one unsold sitting on the lot?

I don't get this "asking" for an upgrade caper - maybe it's a symptom of the way US carriers have completely devalued their "First Class" (ie: business class domestic product) by handing it out to every Tom, Dick and Harry for nicks.

Premium seats are there for two kinds of people - those who pay for them, and those who burn miles or credits to obtain them. If the flight is chockers and they need to move elites up from Y to clear some room, then a third kind of person qualifies.

If you're a pleb, and you paid for a Y ticket, then get down the back of the bloody bus where you belong, and enough of the whinging.

Don't even think of trying this rot in Australia. QF (quite rightly) does not dish out upgrades willy-nilly simply because you've got a nice smile, you "ask nicely", wear your best suit, flop it out to impress the check-in droid, whatever.

Here's a thought - maybe the next time you rock up to the supermarket counter with a 600ml coke in your hand, ask if you can have a 2 litre bottle, coz there are a heap of them down the back covered in dust?

Jesus wept.....

This is getting ugly fast.

This really doesn't have anything to do with miles or points, so I'm going to shut this down and move it travel buzz. Hopefully people can answer this relative newcomers question with a little more sincerity.
