Airmiles redeemed Flight, Is it possible to Stop over?

Ok, this is a strange question. I'm planning a flight for the wife and I to Hawaii, redeeming some airmiles.
We are leaving Austin TX going to Hawaii. We will have to stop most likely in LAX or SFO. On our way to Hawaii. We have family that we want to visit with in California.(Drop off the kids at Grandma's in California)
Is it possible to get a Flight that would have a delay or stop over of a day or two? Before continuing on to Hawaii? Trying to do this without having to buy another ticket, just to go to Austin TX to California.

Thanks for any input.

Which airline are you flying, and have you already ticketed? Some airlines allow a stopover and some do not. Once you have ticketed, typically you have to pay a fee to the airline if you need to reticket. With FF tickets airlines allow change of dates without any penalty, as long as you fall within the conditions of the original ticket. But adding a stopover to an existing ticket would likely require reticketing. Check with the airlines.

Contact the airlines for their rules. In the 48 US states United does not allow stopovers, while AA allows stopovers. Rules may be different for Hawaii.

Yup, AA does allow stopover to Hawaii. United doesn't--boo United. In fact, I know someone who's going LAX to BOS (as stopover) and then on to HNL and back to LAX.

And the two person award on AA is 100k for first class. A sensational value.

Delta doesn't allow it either. Went to Maui on Delta from east coast. Better to stop off on way back--enables you to break up the flight, and not have to fly the red-eye.

JeffLewis2: According to UA's current Worldwide Timetable (Sep. 6-Oct. 30, 2000; p. 24):
  • One stopover en route to your final destination or one open jaw is permitted for a flight award on United between the continental U.S. and Hawaii or between the U.S. and the Caribbean, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Central or South America or Europe.
  • When traveling on an upgrade award, a maximum of two en route stopovers (one each way) is permitted.

I flew from PHL to HNL 2 years ago on United as a FF ticket, took a week stopover on the way out in San Francisco (was out there for business.
Am scheduled for PHL-HNL the first week of October, this time on Delta (another FF reward), also taking stopover (in SFO) on the way back. Parents are doing stopover in Las Vegas.
Typically I believe going to Hawaii, anywhere along a valid route, you can do a stopover.

That's great news about Delta. Their program rules have changed since we went to Maui with them a couple years ago--no stopover allowed then. But I just checked, and stopover clearly allowed now.
