Can any one provide me with details regarding to whom we should write to oppose the UAL- US Air merger? The last thing we need is UAL mismanaging an even larger and more oppressive airline operation. Writing " to your congressman or senator" is all well and good, but who at DOT, DOJ, DOC, and FTC should we apprise of our views? Lastly, does anyone know where we can find out about attending public hearings to voice our individual opposition to this silly proposed merger?

I would say that, on balance, the vigorous enforcement of the antitrust laws has been good for America.

Writing to politicans is your best bet. I've written to local County executive, local mayor, state rep, state senator, US rep, Bud 'PorkBelly' Shuster, US senator, DOJ, DOT, state governor. All addreseses can be relatively easily found on websites such as
www.senate.gov www.house.gov www.doj.gov www.dot.gov
and your state's website

I've gotten replies from everyone except Mr. Porkbelly, including some non-form letters and phone calls. I doubt it'll make a difference, but at least I know I tried! (The best letter is the one who details good reasons to oppose the merger -- I sent two -- first three pages long, another five!)

First of all, that was uneccessary.

Second, if you would like to respond in a reasoned manner as to why enforcement of antitrust laws is bad for America, please do so. I would be happy to engage in a public debate later this week on this issue.

But the only responses have been calling people "commies" and offending millions of New Englanders...

Such responses hardly carry much intellectual weight.

I don't think it's possible to argue the point since it's a philosophical one. The question has do do with belief in the basic right of self-determination versus the value of the government regulating and planning the economy. I weigh the former heavily. And I'm not naive enough to think that the crazily selective enforcement of these vague and overreaching laws has more to do with the good of America than the good of the politicians involved.

Of course we all should know "US rep, Bud 'PorkBelly' Shuster" has a nice wide 4 lane divided highway in W Penna with his name at every fine entrance. It runs from Nowhere1, PA directly to Nowhere2, PA. Ugh!

Of course it is a philisophical issue- But it is one with real, tangible, economic results, and therefore should be debated and discussed.

As an antitrust lawyer, I see examples of collusion that would make most people sick.

I suppose one with a backgorund in Microsoft and probably and economic interest therein as well would be a little mad at the DOJ's antitrust division right now....

Since I don't enjoy having my mailbox filled with junkmail from marketig
firms that use sites like this as a source for email addresses, I choose to
not post one. Also, I don't believe in providing the marketing dataminers
with any help, hence my choice ot post no details. It is unfortunate that
it offends your sensibilities. I fly between 150K - 200K per year on
business, Asia-Pac, Europe and lots of US trips, mainly on UAL, primarily
out of SFO. I am not an employee nor am I involved in the labor "cold war"
that seems to be so enhancing the quality of service on the airline.

It is sad that some users of this site seem to have nothing better to do
with their time than post inane responses. But, then again, human nature is
always interesting

You may not have noticed but emails or not, the definite custom is for folks here to add some details about their location etc. The little "profile" button allows you to share that with us. But, maybe those cunning mass mailers will just POST you boxes of junk mail addressed to: "Red Wine Person, San Francisco Area"

Still, allegedly flying around 4,000 miles a week you'd hardly get time to open e-mail I guess?

Oztamps, I think you are being a little harsh on our new friend. How is someone new to the board supposed to know how privacy issues are handled?

I check these boards regularly because I am interested in travel, and want to learn about others experiences. I as well had nothing in my profile for some time. I still refuse to make my e-mail public. It is nobody's elses business if I choose to keep that private.

This board depends on new posters to keep coming on and providing alternative points of view. Otherwise it is always the same old, same old. It is NOT beneficial to discourage first time posters who then may not come back.
