Laser System Could Detect Bombs at Airports
MIT’s Research Laboratory of Electronics and Princeton University have teamed up to develop a quantum cascade laser as part of a system that takes just 100 microseconds to identify an object’s spectroscopic signature and thus detect explosives and firearms at airport checkpoints. Existing detection methods require a heavy radiation source that can take anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes to correctly analyze an object’s spectroscopic signature and determine if the object is a security threat.

The problem isn't the technology, it's the staffing. 95% miss is still 95%. Also, since no former heads of DHS/TSA have any investment stake in this new technology, the likelihood of it being implemented is nil.
