Florida Tourist Arrested for Mailing Himself Meth at Hotel

A tourist heading to Key West was arrested after mailing meth to his Florida hotel.
Robert Bare, a 24 year old from Arizona, was arrested at a hotel in Key West on February 8 after allegedly mailing some meth there. Bare was hoping to try meth for the first time while he was on vacation on the Florida island.
When Bare mailed the package, he was not yet a guest at the hotel and so addressed it only to the hotel. When staff opened the small box, they found the drugs wrapped in dirty socks and paper. Bare had included his name and return address on the package.
After finding the drugs, the hotel called the police and an undercover officer was sent to the hotel to act as the hotel manager. Bare arrived, checked in with the faux manager, received his package, and was then arrested in the lobby after a brief struggle by more undercover officers.
Bare allegedly told police he had never tried meth before, but wanted to give it a shot in Key West “because he was in town to party,” Alyson Crean, a police spokesperson, told FL Keys News.
The arrest was for suspicion of methamphetamine possession, resisting arrest, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Bare posted $19,000 bond and was released at 3:15 a.m. Friday, February 10.
According to Rehab International, the majority of crystal meth users are between 18 and 23 and the drug has the highest rate of relapse for addictive substances. The National Institute on Drug Abuse claims that 12.3 million Americans over 12 have tried it at least once.
