Crowne Plaza OCEC - Muscat Master Thread

this hotel was a pleasant surprise for >USD100

it is a big barn of a place but just a short distance from the airport, excellent breakfast with pork bacon, fresh juices, good coffee

service needs to be improved as well as wi-fi strength but if you are driving a rental car, this could be a good all-purpose new lodging option in Muscat

Does anyone know if the hotel is close (i.e. within easy walking distance) to any local cafes / restaurants or grocery / convenience stores? What about the public bus - does it stop anywhere close to the hotel?

Stayed there last year - there's very little near by.
Close to airport and exhibition / conference centre
maybe 5 miles from the sea and 15/30 miles from Muscat old town

Smart new hotel
OK for a single night

If you're thinking pointbreaks, you're really going to have spend some of the cash/point savings on renting a car. It's really set up as a MICE and airport hotel.

Crowne Plaza Muscat OCEC [Master Thread]

Muscat has two Crowne Plaza hotels: the venerable Crowne Plaza Muscat in Qurum above the beach, and the newer Crowne Plaza Muscat OCEC at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre, opened in late 2017. This thread is for the latter property.

Website available at this link. Full review coming shortly.

A solid four-star experience

A solid four-star experience (10 Photos)

Crowne Plaza Muscat OCEC

Being Oman-based and trapped by the ever-changing COVID-19-related travel restrictions, staycations within Muscat and Oman are the only shot Ive got. In my curiosity of sampling the international hotel pool and my flirting with IHG loyalty, I wanted to give Crowne Plaza Muscat OCEC a try as a hotel guest rather than a frequent diner at their fabulous Thai restaurant, Charm Thai.

Location

Businesses are all about location, location, location, and off the cuff this property might come across an odd choice: its part of the Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre, a large, purpose-built convention facility with the five-star JW Marriott, four-star Crowne Plaza and a three-star Ibis Styles [construction has yet to start on this one] complementing it. The greater plot it sits in is a masterplanned development called Madinat Al Irfan, which will encompass residences, commercial activities and outdoor spaces - but absolutely none of this has been built yet and it doesnt seem like it will soon, so the immediate area is rather sparse except for the lovely wadi and greenery just below one side of the hotel.

On the plus side, the isolation makes for a relatively peaceful experience at the hotel, without the noise youd get from revving engines and general activity like at hotels in Qurum. The hotel is also next to a major highway and feeder roads that connect it easily to the rest of Muscat with minimal fuss.

Muscat International Airport [MCT] is approximately a ten-minute drive from the hotel, and can be easily accessed via taxi, rental or hotel car.

Room

Access to the guest room floors is via keycard access for an extra bit of security, with four elevators available. As the hotel moves away from plastics, the keycards are made of wood and are very cool to handle.

I booked an entry-level room but was upgraded to the best-in-house Diplomatic Suite on the fifth floor. Located at the end of the hall, the double door opened onto a small foyer and hallway that extended to the bedroom and guest bathroom on the left, and the office and main living area on the right. At approximately 158 square meters of living space, this is a very spacious suite. The main living room features a dedicated dining area with dining table and six chairs under a feature light fixture, a living area with two couches, two chairs, coffee table and large television, and a separate kitchen-like area with a full-sized refrigerator, sink and storage for dishes and cutlery. The living room opens onto a large terrace overlooking the pool below and wadi beyond, with sea views to the left and mountain views to the right. The terrace was furnished two four-top tables, two sun loungers and a couch, making it perfect to relax on.

There is an office within the suite with a desk, office chair and two seats as well as a television within the room. A guest bathroom is available just down the hall from the office to the left of the main entrance.

The private space of the suite consists of an entry foyer leading to a walk-in closet straight ahead and the bedroom to the left. Fitted with a comfortable king-sized bed, chaise at the end of the bed and an armchair, the bedroom was conservatively furnished in a similar aesthetic to the standard hotel rooms, with views over the convention center and the emptiness of the upcoming Madinat Al Irfan development. The ensuite bathroom featured a large Jacuzzi front-and-center, with a double vanity and shower stall on one side, with a separate toilet room on the other featuring the commode, a bidet and another sink. A large peek-a-boo window overlooking the bedroom forms part of the bathroom design, and I didnt notice if there was any curtain or privacy barrier to close it off. The bathroom also features a large window overlooking the outside world, but there are heavy-duty curtains to close those views off. Air-conditioning is individually controllable.

I was looking very forward to using the beckoning Jacuzzi but it sadly wasnt working during my stay - the little screen kept restarting and none of the buttons would do anything. Be warned that the lights are a bit finicky: all the lights come on when you enter the room, and are controlled by touch-sensitive switches that dont necessarily turn off what you want them to.

Wi-fi is complimentary for members of IHG Rewards, with fast connection speeds and very good coverage throughout the room and property.

Service

First and foremost, I have to express my deep gratitude to the hotels upper management and new general manager, Adam, for the exceptional upgrade we received. The hotels F&B manager, Nishant, is also great. I want to give special mentions to Joey at the Wadi Bar, Moe at Mosaic and Maiyasa and Shadia from the reception for their friendliness and professionalism, and for making interactions pleasant.

I do have some constructive criticism for the property in the form of empowering their staff to rigorously enforce COVID-related rules such as the aforementioned crowding/coughing issue I encountered at check-in and by asking guests to properly wear their masks when dealing with staff and wandering indoors. This is an Oman-wide problem, and a lot of it stems from the cultural schism between locals acting untouchable and service staff who are not supposed to question them. Ive said it before and Ill say it again: this needs to change - rules are rules. I would also urge the management to better staff the front desk and make sure that the male associates shape up - poor Maiyasa works super-hard checking people in and out, answering phones, delegating orders to staff, keeping the hotel running and still being pleasant under all the stress, and she could use real help.

Overall

For a four-star hotel competing in a crowded and heavily-branded market, Crowne Plaza Muscat OCEC punches above its weight with very competitive rates, good food, clean facilities and well-intentioned staff. A bit of fine-tuning will serve it better, but I have faith that the new management will do right by it especially with all the new energy and fresh ideas they plan to inject into the hotel.

Ill be back.

Crowne Plaza Muscat OCEC = Good Airport Hotel but Almost No Elite Benefits

Introduction I had a very late arrival in MCT airport and decided to book a single night at Crowne Plaza OCEC due to proximity to the airport before going to a hotel farther away the next day. I found CP to be nice, modern, and clean; the main negative being the weak IHG loyalty elite benefits compared to other hotel chains. Room I booked the entry level room with points so technically the terms of the IHG program dictate that the hotel did not need to upgrade me at all. The good news is that they did nonetheless; they break down their rooms by view: city, pond, pool. I am not sure such distinctions are worthy of paying extra but for what it’s worth I was upgraded to a room with pool view. This upgrade as Spire pales in comparison with the upgrade Khabah received as Platinum last year in his own hotel review, and is also not competitive with the generous suite upgrades provided by other major chains such as Marriott, Hyatt, and Hilton, whether the reservations are booked with points or cash. I guess this is what contributes to why I do not stay with IHG as often as I could and this CP property does not buck the trend. The room itself was nice enough with a decent working desk and chair, the bathroom was not huge but it had the convenience of having a stand-alone shower separate from the bathtub. There were some tech features which made it apparent the hotel was a new construction such as the do not disturb and housekeeping control panel buttons along with air conditioning controls which worked well and kept the room cool. One oddity about tech going a bit in the wrong direction was that to access wifi, we had to connect to a server marked for our room only and it was not immediately apparent what the password was. After a call at reception I found out that the password was found on the TV under a section mislabeled as “screen mirroring” which was showing our password. This was not exactly self-explanatory, but anyway wifi worked well with speed of 15-20 Mbps. Otherwise, the only issue I noticed was that the sink was not firmly attached to the counter and was loose so it was an accident waiting to happen. Dining Since our arrival at the hotel was in the early hours of the night, we planned on sleeping in and not go to breakfast as it ended too early for us (10:30am). Nonetheless out of interest I asked what are the benefits of Spire Ambassador guests at this hotel, and unfortunately there are none, unlike some CPs which take the liberty to give some benefits on top of those required by the rules. CP Muscat OCEC does not have a lounge, and even if I had paid for my room with cash, I still would not get free breakfast. This is another feature which makes CP uncompetitive against other hotel chains, for example if I was booking a longer stay with intent to have breakfast some mornings. In normal times I would have booked at JW Marriott nearby but it happens to be closed at the moment so CP temporarily has less competition which works in their favor. Overall Overall for the price paid I found CP to be very good, in fact both cash rates and points redemptions were quite low. That makes the hotel a good fit for people who do not have loyalty status with any chain, or if they have only status with IHG. If this hotel was part of other hotel chain it would be a more attractive choice for my own purposes, but they are solid nonetheless for what they are now.

Minor housekeeping: Merged two existing threads for this hotel.

To avoid this happening a second time, I have added the hotel to the Master List
