Best natural deodorant?

Another deodorant thread, this time on natural deodorants.

I have only used Tom's of Maine Natural unscented regular. I think I might try a scented one next time since they don't seem to the most potent deodorants. They also have a long-lasting and roll-on line.

Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for Tom's or other brands?

Thanks!

So, I'm not a woman but I saw this post through the magic of "New Posts" and felt compelled to mention the old-school alum block, quite effective when made wet under the faucet and used immediately after showering. They have no scent and last a long time. I believe they are available under various brand names.

Thanks for pointing me towards the crystal deodorants. I have seen them before, but was never sure if they worked or not. You see crystal and you start thinking new agey. :)

There seems to be a company called Crystal that makes products that get great reviews on Amazon and Drugstore.com. Will have to explore.

I'm not sure if you would call it *natural*, but Clinique has a super deodorant. It really works well. I use the unscented....no allergic reactions.

Dr. Hauschka products are natural and very good.

In America they are available at Whole Foods stores and many other places, I`m sure you`ve heard of them. You can`t find products more natural/ healthy, and the scents are nice.

Just ordinary bicarbonate of soda, costs pence (cents!), works well but is
visible on the skin.

Thank you for amusing me today. I am allergic to most deodorants so I have been using Crystal 25 or so years. I guess it does sound "new agey" but it isnt. The only thing about it that is "new agey" is that it now comes in a roll-on. When I first started using Crystal it came in a lump with a little bag. You wet it and rubbed it under your arms. Until you got it relatively smooth you had to do it gingerly, then let it dry a little and put it back in the bag. I had a cat who absolutely adored it - I walked into the bathroom and there he was licking it like crazy. I had wondered why it was a little "knobby"

Ewwww. :)

Have you tried the newer roll-on? Does it work just as well?

Owlchick Jun 18, 2009 12:46 pm

LLM uses crystal deodorants and accidentally broke one so she shared a chunk with me.

Worked well, but I returned to unnatural deodorants later :D

The roll-on is not really a ROLL-on in that it has no ball that rolls through liquid. It is more of a stick with a round, smooth top. This way you don't have the rough rock effect Linda mentions. The substance is exactly the same, so it works just as well. It's like square soap and round soap.

That said, there are now liquid roll-ons on Alum basis. Why you'd want that is beyond me. They might work the same but they are liquid (not good for travel) and they won't last as long.

Here is one that looks natural:

Yes it is a roll-on!!!! I buy it on-line so I don't need to hunt for it and have one packed at all times. My current one is Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crysal Roll-On (liquid with the ball just like regular roll-ons). I just pulled mine out and it is made by TCCD International - made in Pompano Beach, FL. I googled crystal roll-ons to find it originally and ordered about a dozen at a time. I didn't buy it from their website (can't remember where - I'm in Aruba right now so have no paperwork) but their website is www.tccd.com according to the back of the bottle.

I also use the liquid Crystal roll on. I usually spritz a little Weleda citrus deodorant on over it, which is also a natural product. My husband uses the solid crystal, and it works very well.

Emeraldcity Jun 19, 2009 3:20 pm

I use Tom's or Crystal roll on. Both work equally well providing I am not doing anything that is causing me a heavy sweat. (Like a tennis game or something) Then I have to use a REAL deoderant, but I suffer for it as I react to the aluminum in deoderants now that I am older.

CApreppie Jun 19, 2009 4:19 pm

Thanks everyone so far for their thoughts. :) I appreciate finding out that the Crystal roll-on is not really a roll-on in the traditional sense. I think I'm going to try it.

I'd try the liquid alum ones, but I see that they use the lovely parabens and the point for me was to try to get as natural as possible.

My liquid Crystal deodorant doesn't have parabens. It's called Crystal Body Deodorant Roll On.

I use the Coconut Deodorant Powder from Lush (www.lush.com). I love it. It keeps me dry and the scent is rather pleasant. I even use it on my feet before I put on my socks and tennies. I take some of the powder in a little container when I travel. It doesn't leak and doesn't melt. A plus in my book!

curl Jul 11, 2009 8:35 am

i've used JASON deodorant.... it works pretty well (as well as any natural I've tried). I stunk to high heaven with Tom's.

I find that these work somewhat better when layered with a powder. the organic body powder from Origins is nice - i put that on first, the deodorant over the top.

Naturally Fresh Deodorant Crystal

100% Pure & Natural - 24 hr Protection 4.25 oz - Lasts up to a Year

Okay- I began using the crystal deodorant back in 1993. At that time, it was the big rock in a bag and took a while to smooth off a side. Unlike what most of you have suggested; running it under the tap to wet it; I have just not dried my pits and used the crystal until pits are dry. I have one in my gym bag, one in my always packed travel bag and one in my bathroom medicine cabinet. I switched to the stick instead of the rock 5 years ago. It's the rock shaved down to fit in a plastic holder with a rounded top.

Natural Mineral Salts, Ammonium Alum
Distributed by TCCD International

I haven't had a problem with clothing stains, stinky pits or stinging after waxing/shaving my pits!!!

First, welcome on FT! :)

Second, I very much agree with your crystal deo assessment. But if a 4.25oz stick only lasts a year, you are using it much too heavily as the description of your method indicates.

I am a man. I keep my pit hair groomed short but don't shave it. My body odor is not very strong, fortunately. Still I use the crystal daily, of course. A stick of that size will last at least 2-3 years for me. I use the wetted crystal method, not the rub under arm till dry method. The idea is to kill the bacteria that remain after washing. The idea is NOT to build up a layer of crystal under your arm. ;)

What I find really important is to wash very well with soap that will actually get rid of the smell completely. Only then will the crystal deo work well because it doesn't cover up any smell since there is no fragrance. I just got this shower gel that just doesn't cut it. I can still smell a little sweat in the arm pits if I bring my nose close after I have taken a shower with that product. When I use ordinary soap and wash in the same manner (good scrubbing being important) there is no residual odor whatsoever.

Crystal Stick Deodorant

I wasn't clear on my last posting concerning the length of time my crystal lasts. Scary, or not, I haven't purchased a new deodorant since I threw away my first ever rock and bought the 3 sticks. The one in my medicine cabinet is at least 5 years old and only half gone!!! Well worth my original $6.99+tax cost!!

Ah, that sounds much more like it. Thanks for the clarification. ^

The people who make the Crystal stick thing also make a pump spray. I use the stick on the road, but at home I keep the pump because the BF likes sprays instead of any roll-on or normal deodorant stick.

No BO from me and I don't sweat so much so the lack of antiperspirant doesn't bother me.

I, too, leave my underarms wet after drying off the rest of my body. Because my hand is dry, the crystal is easy to grasp. This method also saves the step of wetting the crystal.

My crystal is tiny, smaller than the stick with screw-on cover you guys are talking about. It broke off a larger piece I dropped. No matter how stuffed my toiletry bag is, I can always shove the crystal in there.

I am loving this product from Sephora. I have the grapefruit one.

I is ridiculously expensive for a deo(!) but I had a giftcard so splurged.
I wish I didn't like it so much. Goes on in a smooth and creamy way - I sometimes find the Toms/Jasons stick, not really sure how to describe it.

I was using the crystal (which by the way does come as both a stick w rounded top AND in a more traditional liquid roll-on form) but after about 2 months, it stopped working. Have heard good things about something called Dr. Mist and a few of the pastes but haven't tried them.

What do you mean, it stopped working? You mean, it didn't have a deodorizing effect anymore? That's strange. Really strange. I have never heard of that or experienced that. As I said, mine is years old and works like on the first day. Doesn't look dirty, either, in case anyone's wondering. Did you perhaps change your soap? It is important to be really bacteria/odor free before you use it.
