Upgrade options?

I have an upcoming LAX-BOS flight in a few days. Couple days ago I hurt my back badly lifting something and after chiropractor visits, meds etc still in a lot of pain and unable to sit for longer than a few minutes. I would have to look into an upgrade from coach if this is still continuing by flight day. What is my best option to upgrade - call in advance, do it myself online, or go to the airport early and ask at the counter? Also are the seats in business or first comfortable enough to lie down fairly flat in for someone who's only 5'3"? ExpertFlyer shows availability in J,C,D,Z as business class, I can't figure out which codes are first class. I would do more research if only I could sit at the computer :) Thanks in advance.

If you are willing to pay the full difference between economy and first, you should be able to upgrade to first at any time prior to day of travel. The seats are not full "lie-flat" seats, but they do offer leg support and decent recline. Otherwise, you can upgrade at T-6 by either going on-line and paying the reduced upgrade cost when checking in for your flight. You can also call at T-6, but I would believe that anyone wanting an upgrade to first will do so on-line and take the seats before VX will answer the phone.

Thank you! I see the upgrade at T-6 is $299 vs. about $1300 up front (ouch!) so I'll see how the back is doing and take my chances that morning.

Hi, sorry to barge in, if I buy an Instant Upgrade to Main Cabin Select, can I then upgrade that to F using the T-6 upgrade? I presume the cost for BOS-SFO would be similar to LAX-BOS; is $299 from Y+ to F? Thanks!

Thanks joedish. Does anybody have any idea what the load is like BOS-SFO on a Friday night and SFO-BOS on the late Sun morning departure? (i.e am I likely to be able to score a T-6 upgrade)? And sorry to recap - the $299 fee is the same for Y to F or Y+ to F right?

From MCS (y+) to F would be $169 to upgrade. BOS-SFO might be full of elites on a
Friday. I would say your chances are a bit better on the Sunday departure

Great, thanks mr27! I will probably go Y+ (MCS) both ways then and try my luck with the upgrade on Sunday.

Which dates and flights are you specifically booked on? F tends to fill up with full fare guests on BOS flights well in advance. For the next couple of Fridays and Sundays, F is nearly full already.

thanks VXCabinCrew ! I haven't booked my flights yet, I was trying to decide which class of ticket to buy. I will probably be flying BOS-SFO Fri 14 or 21 June, and returning SFO-BOS Sun 16 or 23 June respectively. So I guess I should really stick to Y+ (MCS) if F will be full?

As a recap, I was able to upgrade both myself and my husband to F that morning. Even though the seats weren't lie flat, they were still easier on my back than sitting upright for six hours.

Now my only gripe is that the miles haven't credited to my Virgin Atlantic account after a week, and I can't find my boarding pass :( Anyone know if there's a chance I can still get the miles?

Yes, you should be able to. I would recommend calling VX with your VS/VX account info
and the miles will post within 3-5 days.

Miles from VX flights take several weeks to show up. You need to call Virgin Atlantic if you don't see them.

Virgin America can't do anything about Flying Club miles after your flight is flown. It's Virgin Atlantic's issue if you already took the flights because it's their program.
