I believe that you would eligible for an urgent travel appointment within 5 days of your DOT. So, if you date of travel is 6/15, you could make an appointment. Please feel free to check it out on the official website though.
|
Do you have any updates? Hopefully, your application is "In Process" now. : )
|
We had a good experience. Passports arrived today, 2 weeks to the day from mailing them (expedited).
May 28 Application submitted by priority mail June 3 - received by State Department June 4 - $239.53 x 2 fee redeemed June 10 - passport approved and being printed June 10 - passport sent by express mail June 11 - delivered |
Two weeks is impressive. Assuming this was for renewal, yes? Do you know what center processed it? My renewal w regular service to Philadelphia [edited by Moderator] took 38 days while ExpatExp's expedited renewal also to Philly took only 17 days.

A new (though limited) option for those looking at renewing passports:
https://travel.state.gov/content/tra...ew-online.html |
Just received my new (renewed) passport. Standard processing.
May 25 - Mailed old passport and application. Regular first class mail. May 31 - Check cleared. June 10 - New passport mailed. June 12 - Received new passport. 18 days start to finish. |
I'd like to hear from people who use the online application site. Opens at 9am PT every day, but there are limited spots;
http://https://mytravel.state.gov/s/...ssport-renewal Existing passport gets cancelled when you apply, and you don't send your old passport in. I'm curious if that affects Global Entry - no passport is required to enter, but I'm sure a cancelled passport is in their system. Anyone care to speculate? Can I re-enter with GE if I have a cancelled passport? |

You need a valid passport to travel. If by doing an online application, your current passport is cancelled, don’t think you’d be able to enter/leave the country. Or your destination/departure point for that matter.

I forgot to mention I have 2 other passports that I could use to enter other countries. I only need a US passport to reenter the US

Well if it is your US passport that is linked to your Global Entry and it has been cancelled, and you are trying to use that passport to enter the US, then you’ll have issues.
While a passport is not required to be shown at entry using GE, a valid passport is a primary requirement to utilize the benefit of the program. If your passport expires or is cancelled, your TTP membership will remain active but you will not be able to use the TTP program to expedite entry until your TTP profile is updated with your new valid passport information. Also, in 2023 the CBP ended its temporary COVID-era official policy that allowed US citizens to a) travel to and b) enter the US on expired US passports that it implemented in response to the processing backlog resulting from COVID. An expired passport is no longer acceptable to travel to the US. Therefore, if you are able to present yourself to an admissions officer at a US port of entry while possessing an expired US passport, then under most circumstances you should be allowed to enter the US after extensive secondary inspection in which CBP will verify your identity and citizenship and eligibility for admission. So, if you know you must travel from and return to the US before receiving your new US passport, and you can travel to your destination and return to the US using your other passport(s), then renewing online so as to have your expired/canceled US passport in your possession at the US port of entry, is a pretty good plan. Just be sure to allow LOTS of time in your schedule for delays at the port of entry while your admission is processed. |

Very true, but the issues should not be a showstopper in terms of entering the US.

How long does the online application take? If they cancel your old passport, it better come quickly.

If you are traveling internationally in less than 8 weeks, you cannot renew online because we are only offering routine service.
Need your passport in less than 3 weeks? Make an appointment to renew in person at a passport agency or center. |

Thanks for the additional info. But before you get to experience the extra scrutiny, how would you be even allowed to board the plane at your origin if you have an expired passport?

Good question. The OP stated he has passports from other countries, which why my response included, "So, if you know you must travel from and return to the US before receiving your new US passport, and you can travel to your destination and return to the US using your other passport(s)....,"

For my mom (regular processing, standard passport, standard shipping):
May 20 (Monday): submitted via USPS (from NY) May 22 (Wednesday): received at TX processing center Jun 14 (Friday): new passport shipped Jun 17 (Monday): new passport received So less than 4 weeks from date of receipt. I took her photo and printed at FedEx for $1.69 + sales tax |
The passport folks must have hired a lot of new people and geared up to be ready for the re-launch of online renewals.
I mailed my passport for renewal on Tuesday May 21 - regular mail not priority from NC. On Thursday June 6 the new passport was in my mailbox. No expedited processing and no expedited shipping. Maybe I just got lucky but 16 days including USPS regular mail delivery both ways is pretty impressive. |

Curious. Mailed passport May 23 or so. Status shows "in process" since May 29th. But the payment check hasn't been cashed yet. Normally they cash it even before the status updates. Any idea what that might be?
P.S. Wonder if I forgot to sign the check :/ If I did - nothing to do but wait till they contact me, I guess? Today (June 21, so 3 weeks since acceptance) received an email with a copy of the letter asking me to mail the check to them. Online status also shows "more information requested". Sent the new check priority mail, of course (and looked over it a dozen times to make sure nothing's missing :) ). Let's see how long it takes them to cash the check and finish processing. |
This is giving me hope for a quick turnaround. Both of my kids are now at the age of finding employment (summer jobs, internships, etc.), and I feel that it's best that they carry a passport card for their I-9 form verification instead of a passport (too valuable), birth certificate (too flimsy), or social security card (permanently in a safe deposit box). Miss Swede's passport is set to expire in 10 months with some potential int'l travel this fall/winter, so we submitted her renewal application last week (standard processing and shipping). Baby Swede's doesn't expire until 2026, but I think I just might bite the bullet and do a renewal now--plus since she's 16, she can do a mail-in/online renewal going forward, and I no longer have to find an appointment at a bleepin' post office* or civic building (cue confetti).
* - for those in the Denver area, there are quite a few post offices south and east out in the flatlands that have open times pretty much every day of the week. |
Renewal / Expedited to / from Brooklyn
Mailed June 10 Received June 27 |

Age 16 allows ten-year U.S. passports. :tu:

Seemingly the DoS has been piloting the idea of "expediting" passport applications from those who are doing so from missions abroad. This has not been widely publicized yet, however supposedly if one shows proof of travel within 14 days, one's passport will be done within that time frame and if not it can "take up to six weeks". Seems to me that this means that the regular fast service that we have enjoyed is now the "expedited" option, and now there is a slower track for any others. However missions that offer this no longer give people hassle about retaining their current passport uncancelled, until the new passport is received (meaning that one has to go pick up the new passport when it arrives).

I’m having trouble following this - and maybe because I’m new to this corner of FT. Does that mean if I sent in my app last week I should expect it to take longer than the more recent DPs suggest? :(

My travel is on July 15. Today was the first day I could call and ask the customer service for help. So I did - according to the CS, if passport is being renewed by mail, I am not eligible to use a passport office in person. Customer service did charge me $60 extra to "expedite" but made no promises as to whether/when the passport will be processed. Their official line is - if NPC does not send me the passport by July 15, I will not be able to travel, no recourse. Anyone dealt with this? Is this correct? |

Ok, this isn't working out too well. My new check was delivered to the NPC (VA address) the very next day, June 22. Since then - nothing, new check not cashed, no updates.

May 29 - mailed passport for renewal, regular service June 21 - got letter (by email) that my check is missing a signature, and request to send a new check. June 22 - Sent new check on June 21, overnight, delivered on June 22 July 3 - Call to the customer service, was asked to pay for expedited service (and told I am not eligible for an appointment) Several calls in-between, received somewhat contradictory information (eligible for appointment, not eligible, wait etc) July 8 - Call, set up appointment at the local agency for July 15 (actually, use the appointment I set up online earlier, otherwise would have no availability until a week later. Unclear how that would work, since the customer service agent on the phone instructed me to "bring your old passport to the appointment" :/ ) July 10 - Notified by email that passport is issued and mailed July 12 - New passport received (together with the old one in the same envelope) I am guessing if not for my original screw-up, I would have the new passport issued on June 21st and without any extra fees. BTW, the new "52 page" passport actually has 1 fewer visa pages than the old one. Usable pages now are 9-50, used to be 9-51. Curious that it's still called a "52 page". |
Color me impressed.
July 2: Submitted online renewal for book and card July 3: Card charged July 5: Notified that was renewal application was being processed July 10/12: Shipping notification for book and card respectively. July 13: Passport book arrived. July 18: Passport card arrived Overall I'm impressed. Barely two weeks start to finish which includes a federal holiday too. I was hoping that my renewal wouldn't take forever since I want to submit my GE renewal as soon as possible in case I need to interview yet again. (If I have to I'd like to do it while visiting friends later this fall as there's no enrollment centers near here) |
Wow... I am impressed
7/19 (Friday) - online regular renewal (photo uploaded from my phone, first one rejected (background was not "offwhite") second photo (with flash) accepted (same background)) 7/22 (Monday) - notified payment processed and processing begins 7/25 (Thursday) - notified passport was printing, Notified shipped, tracking number rcvd (priority mail which I guess is regular shippoing) 7/26 - USPS says it will arrive 7/27 7/27 - USPS says out for delivery So 8 days for normal processing and regular shipping I am out of town with a hold mail (did not expect 8 days!) so neighbor is watching in case it somehow slips through the hold mail. note: online renewal opens at 1pm eastern time and has a daily limit. i think started mine around 4pm so not difficult to get your application in... |
This is one area of the US government that (nearly) unfailingly works well. As a nationalized citizen by marriage, I often expect more problems, but have been pleasantly surprised.
My renewal: Tuesday, week 1: mailed in form, used expedited servie Fraiday, week 1: notified that it was received and being processed Monday, week 2: notified that passport approved and was sent to printing (also the ID / Password) Thursday, week 2: received passport Tuesday, week 3: received ID / Passcard Wednesday, week 3: received old, cancelled passport When I compare this to my other nationality (Belgium) it is much simpler, as can be done through the post, and leagues ahead of where our official residency is (Italy), where "normal" citizens wait 8+ months for passport renewals.. |
July 28th (Sunday) - Sent old passport and application via Certified First Class Mail.
Will update as things happen. |
Renewed online Aug 15, passport in hand Aug 26 via express mail. Very impressed.
Printed Hot Springs AK |
Renewal, non-expedited:
- Mailed Friday, August 16 - Received @ passport office Wednesday August 21 - Received new passport Friday, September 13th So exactly 4 weeks from mailing to receiving new one. The online passport status check site still shows as 'In Process' however. Haven't received old passport yet. |
Based on the lack of comments here and on mainstream media outlets, it would appear State has finally figured things out... good on them!
