Replacing a limited-validity/emergency passport, which was issued at an embassy.
|
The turnaround time is definitely getting shorter.
Passport office recorded my renewal application as received on June 21, new passport arrived today - exactly 5 weeks from when they logged in my application to me having the new passport in hand. This was regular processing, not expedited. Update: old passport arrived today, 12 days after the new one arrived. This was by regular mail. |

Any chance that congressional offices are getting more requests for help simply because the press articles mention this option? I’m pretty sure that past passport application processes didn’t include so many people asking for help. Did we even know that we could seek help?

Applied at post office: 05/10/2023
Received by State Dept: 05/15/2023 As of today: Friday 7/28/2023 it is still in "In Process" status I called the National Passport Information Center because I have international travel booked for Friday 8/11/2023. They told me they could not physically access my record because that travel is not "within" two weeks (which is the wordage used on the passport application website.) It's semantics, whether "within" means "14 days or less" or "less than 14 days", but I was told that's a hard requirement. It got me thinking that I could have just said I travel on Thursday 8/10/2023 and they'd have had no way of knowing, but I'm not going to lie to the State Department. But they are closed weekends, meaning I need to call back Monday, which is a mere 11 days before traveling. Am I screwed here? What are the odds I get any kind of positive response? Should I consider rebooking?

I called Saturday 7am PT. Was the agent's second call :) Unfortunately, the 14 days exactly from date of travel does NOT include weekends (or federal holidays), so I need to call yet again first thing tomorrow morning. Wish that exclusion was noted somewhere on the website. Halfway to panicville :( |

Applying for a minor under 16
Does anyone have datapoints on recent applications via USPS in person applications for a minor under 16?
We’re able to snag an appointment for next week and wanted a sense of turnaround times. Almost booked a trip tonight before checking the government sites (destination and US State dept) and the destination says 6 month validity from exit but State Dept says, “Passports must be valid at time of entry through departure (throughout the duration of stay).” Not going to take the chance that the State Dept could be wrong. Current expiry is in March 2024 and travel was at the end of December 2023. |
We got our son’s minor passport in 2022. Appointment at a community college near our home city. We got his photos at a walgeeens. We did the application pdf on passport wizard and then printed it. Then appointment. Then after the appointment we must have used our checks etc at the appointment or I mailed it by priority mail. I just forget.

Status ‘not available’ after one month
I mailed in in an expedited passport renewal 27 June 2023; it was received 30 June and my check was cashed 3 July 2023. I’ve been checking for an update online and as of today I’m still getting a ‘not available’ status-but a friend of mine appplued a week after I did and his status is ‘in process’. Should I be concerned that my application was lost? At what point do you recommend reaching out to my senator’s office for assistance? Overseas travel is 29 October. Thank you gif any thoughts/suggestions!

Does anyone know if there is any difference in time due to selecting the "Large Book" vs the "Regular Book"?
Need the fastest possible turnaround, but would like the large book (if it won't delay things though). |
I think the wiki post at the top of the thread needs to be updated: the phone options have changed. It is now 2 for new passport. [Wiki updated by Moderator]
In any case, I called up and was told my best chances are to pay the extra for expedited and fast delivery, which I was happy to do; I asked about in-person and they said if they have an appointment available, they will provide that if my travel is within five days. This seems different to the wiki guide. |

My passport was not due to expire until the end of March 2024. I was going to wait until November, when we return from a trip, to apply for a new one.
Then, our plans changed; we are now planning a trip to a destination which requires six months validity beyond our planned stay.
Arriving Soon PASSPORT SERVICES/DOS HOT SPRINGS 9270XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Estimated Delivery on: Monday, Aug 07 And when I actually checked the status of the tracking number, the following shows up: Out for Delivery Today: Expected Delivery 9270XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX Originally Scheduled Aug 7 by 6:00pm |
Additional information.
The passport issue date is 03 AUG 2023. The USPS received the pre-shipment information on August 4, at approximately 3:00 pm (I did not recognize the tracking number when I received the text message, so I did not check the details at the time). The USPS was in possession of the Priority Express Mail envelope two hours later. It arrived at my local post office at about 10:30 this morning and delivered just before 3:00 pm. It was not delivered by our regular carrier and arrived earlier than our regular mail (which has yet to be delivered today). |

The biggest issue with infants/toddlers is whether the photograph is okay (i.e. we had to awkwardly prop up our kids to get the head properly in the frame). |

The passport card arrived today, 9 days after I received the passport book. It has the same issue and expiration dates as the passport book. The return address is the New Orleans Passport Agency's.
To recap. Expedited application. Paid for 1-2 days delivery. Sent application on Jul 5. Delivered to the Passport Services PO Box on July 7. Received by the State Department on July 10. Check cleared my bank on July 11. Passport issued on August 3. Received the new passport on August 5. Received the passport card on August 14. Received the old cancelled passport on August 16. |
Three Questions
Is there a lag between when an app is received at a passport agency and when it appears in the system? In other words, if the app is received August 1, will the system show it on August 1? Or possibly days later?

As I wait for ours (8 weeks and counting), it LOOKS like the online renewal MIGHT be coming back.
The "Renew Passport Online" tile in MyTravelGov is missing (it was there - in addition to the CRBA one - until today), and, this is new... https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...046f260ca6.jpg |
Well this is a first - a family member's passport shipped via UPS NEXT DAY AIR today...
Note that locator 19 shipped from Hot Springs, Arkansas. Received-to-shipped was ~7 weeks. === Renewal, book + card, however passport recently expired (< 5 years): 06/30 - Submitted in person in New Jersey (Monmouth County) 07/05 - Showing In Process, locator code 19 (Washington) 08/21 - Shipped 08/22 - Received New Passport book at 10am 08/25 - Received OLD Passport book 08/29 - Received Passport Card |
Quick update
Mailed renewal end of July expedited with priority mail
Received processed and check cashed around Aug 2 Most recent update shows supporting documents have been mailed as of today. I must have missed the passport being mailed update unless it comes after but so far about 3 weeks all together. I was expecting end of September so if I get it this week I'll be surprised. |

At time of handing in the application at this location, inform them at the counters that you need same-day pick-up — otherwise the Chicago passport agency office may try to tell you it will be ready the next (business) day for pick-up instead and then they may not have it ready the same-day for same-day pick-up. |
can they mail it next day?
