:D That was my feeling as well.

True and false. True my data point should not be taken as representative. But at the same time, "backlog divided by passports processed per week" may not be accurate either as that implies applications are being evenly distributed ("load-balanced") across all issuing sites. I don't't think they are doing that (eg issuing a passport from a West Coast site for an applicant living on the East Coast).

My guess is certain sites have a backlog while others don't but because the numbers being reported are systemwide, they are not portraying an accurate picture.

That is why I used the words "estimated", "on average", "randomness".

I updated my post 684. USPS delivered a day earlier than original estimate but the interesting thing is the passport date of issue is 4 AUG but it wasn't tendered to USPS until the 11th.

It’s a lottery. It all depends on where you apply and where your passport application is processed.

I am fully convinced that our application in Dallas sat there from March through July collecting dust as they were not even in Phase 1. Then, when they were shifted to Charleston it got scanned in so we got an email notification. It then went to the back of their queue whist other, much newer applications, were processed they had already received.

As people are saying that it depends on where one applies, is it better to send to the address in Philadelphia over the one in Irving, if one has a choice? I assume that from these places, the passports are routed to the other passport agencies?

One does not have a choice.

Both had checks cashed same week and both went to "In Processing" status. No emails received, but the child passport status changed to Approved a few days ago and was received today (from Seattle center, apparently).
The adult passport remains in "In processing" status.

Received an email 7 minutes ago confirming that the adult passport is approved and ETA to receive it (8/19/2020)

I just noticed that within the last couple of days my status has gone to "Not Found" also so hoping the same as you. I mailed my passport to Philadelphia on like June 20th.

Comparison w Mexican Consulate Issuing Passport

definitely not apples to apples, but this morning I renewed 3 passports (2 child and 1 adult) at the Mexican consulate in DC - a normal renewal, no expedited process. Was able to schedule the appt within a week. We walked out with 3 in hand in just under 30 minutes, less time than it took to drive the 25 miles to/from. This was way less time than it has taken me to get even one passport at the US embassy in Mexico. I was a little pissed at paying the minimum 1-hour $17 parking fee....

Yes, and there are countries that allow for payments for expedited service where you get your passport in an hour, or even with passport offices at their main international airports for urgent service. There are also countries where one regularly waits weeks or months even in regular times, none of that it really pertinent here.

Just a data reference point. I applied for my son's first passport on 7/18 (that was our in person appointment at the post office). I got an email today that the application was approved and that my son's passport should arrive by 8/25. If it arrives by 8/25 it will have taken just over 5 weeks, which is in the normal range for processing. I don't know if we just got lucky or if the speed of processing is picking up more significantly.
