Finally got through on the phone today and paid the fee to have it rushed, the rep was very nice and advised them that travel is in 10 days. What else can we do?

Contact your Congresscritter's constituent services.

PS-I mailed my routine renewal application in the day after you did, May 5th. They got it May 7th per the USPS receipt, but it didn't show as "In Process" until 6/16 and the 12 week processing period didn't start until then. I do not expect to have my renewed passport until mid-September.

I contacted them today. Not feeling very hopeful though. We should probably cancel booking to get at least half our money back. Horrible thing is we had 2 trips planned this summer and now we cant go. It has been a very rough year and we needed these vacations. I am just heartbroken.

My congressman did process for me and sent it in. I was told they can only send in the request but there are no guarantees. They advised that the passport office is so swamped that request are going longer than the 18 weeks. I can only pray that it is her before next Thursday. Any one got theirs within 8 days after congress help?

Scrolling up, I've seen a few people get theirs within days of contacting their Congressperson. They also have the option of securing you an in-person appointment at the nearest Passport Agency for same day passports. Hope it doesn't come to that but if you need to take that vacation, good luck.

6/21 Sent mine Expedited with 1-2 delivery
6/24 "Processing"

The U.S. Department of State has received your application for your passport book on 06/24/2021. We're now reviewing your application and supporting documents.

You requested expedited service when you applied, which we are currently processing within 6 weeks. Our processing times do not include mailing times, which could add 6 weeks to the door-to-door time.
Can anyone explain the "do not include mailing times, which could add 6 weeks to the door-to-door time"? I paid the $17.56 for 1-2 day delivery. Does that not decrease the 6 weeks door-to-door time?

Regular mailing times to return new passport is Priority Mail which should be 2-3 days for 48 states. If you paid extra shipping, it should be express mail for next day delivery.

Ok, so the $17.65 was essentially a waste of money. Thanks

Same for Express Mail and Priority Mail to a passport acceptance center.

Well, the 17.56 will get your new passport you one day Priority Express Mail instead of 2-3 day Priority Mail. The problem they seem to be having isn't sending out the new passport once they get it completed, it is the application sitting and waiting in the State Department mailroom before State starts processing it. They are calling this "mailing time" even though it usually isn't in the hands of USPS for most of that time. I sent my renewal application in Priority Mail Signature Receipt and it was signed for 3 days after I sent it. It showed as "In Process" for the first time 5 1/2 weeks after they got it. But It looks like you already got past the "mailing (sitting in our mailroom) time", so it should be closer to just the 6 weeks processing.

You will get your passport a couple of days earlier than you would have without the $17.56, though.

Don't thank us, or the USPS - full credit and thanks should be directed to the employees and their managers who process applications....

7/1 Emailed Local congressman and his assistant sent inquiry to agency on same day
7/8 Passport located at agency and email sent back to congressman who then emailed me

They know the urgency of my travel date now which is 2 weeks from tomorrow, so hopefully it will get sent asap. I have been IN PROCESS since 5/7 and mailed my application on 4/7.

If all else fails email your local congressman people. My application has just been sitting there for weeks but hopefully now it will get wrapped up and mailed out finally.

I sent mine in on 6/15 and got my "processing" status on 6/22. My trip is on 8/12 so should I email my congressman too? What do I even say to them?

All you need to do is call their office in Washington and explain your issue to one of their staff members, who can make some calls on your behalf to the State Department. Congressional staff have insider access to the US government, and as a constituent, you are able to ask for their help!

In general, State is saying routine processing is 18+ weeks, 12+ weeks for expedited. That timing is more the case than not, but there sporadic posts here of folks reporting receiving it back in about 6 weeks. It basically depends on what processing center your application was sent to - no real way to choose beforehand or change it after it has been submitted. So, you will almost assuredly need intervention from your congressional representative or senator.

First, sign up for the emailed processing status notifications. Second, did you request expedited processing? If not, call the passport center and request and pay for an "upgrade" to expedited processing. Then, about 3-4 weeks before your travel date, contact one of your congressional reps and ask them to check on it for you. They will need you to complete a form authorizing them to intercede on your behalf. They may be able to get it processed and mailed faster or they may be able to get you an in-person appointment within 72 hours of your flight. Be patient, be flexible.

Are some congressional offices better at this than others? I contacted my local congressman 3 weeks ago and I'm still just waiting.

Without a doubt. I'm sure some are busier than others or the staff is just more helpful at one vs. another. I was surprised to get a human on the second ring and one that immediately acknowledged that he would be able to help. Try your senator and/or your house rep, if you're not getting any response. GL

Also keep in mind that the Passport agencies are being overwhelmed with requests from congressional representatives to speed up passport process. A lot of people in tight timeframes are reaching out to them.

Thank you for posting this. It gives me hope.

My situation is very similar to your dates.

I visited the local post office on June 15 for a lost passport. I expedited the application as our trip is on August 12th.

The check was cashed and the application showed on the website as received and showed as processing on June 18th. Likely Philadelphia as that is the closest office. The Status has not changed since. But I saw it as good news that it went into process so quickly after my sending the application in, three days after. I had read here others waiting weeks before that happened.

Two days ago I got an email that said the same thing. That the application is in process. That was the first email I had received, so hopefully that meant something. But I am still worried, and will do so until the passport is in hand.

I contacted my congressperson today and his staff were very nice, and are going to intervene. He was 90% sure that I will receive the passport on time.

We can not cancel the trip with the tour company after 30 days before the trip, which is going to be Thursday the 15th, as we were going to fly in two days early. So really hoping to get some news soon.

Your case is probably a lot easier than mine since yours doesn't need a lot of verification. Mine was first time applying for a us passport. I'm confident you'll get it soon. Good luck.

based on most commenters' experience and the State website, this is very impressive timing indeed, only 4 weeks total! The delay must really be due to load at individual processing centers. One would hope State is telling passport agents to send the applications to various centers that are less backlogged than others.....

My case is a first time US passport application.
06/24: I received my certificate of naturalization.
06/24: Applied for passport at USPS.
06/25: Application delivered.
06/28: In Process
06/29: Check cleared.
I reached out to my congressional representative. They said they placed a request. We’ll see… I have an international trip for 08/02. Unfortunately, when you become a US citizen you have to surrender your Green Card at the Oath Ceremony, which prevents you from traveling internationally until you receive your US passport. Although I m thrilled to be done with the immigration process, the sudden scheduling of my naturalization interview and oath has totally wrecked my summer travel plans. Now I m just waiting patiently.

It seems from your example, mine and a few others on this page that they are at least getting these into the system and into the processing phase very quickly now. I read on previous pages people waiting a month or much more before it even hit processing.

At least for those of us who expedited.

I think the month plus wait in the mail room is only for routine processing. All posts about expedited applications I've seen have mentioned it being logged into the system within a week of being sent, and that was my experience as well.

Awaiting passport

Timeline:

Passport sent 6/16/21
Status updated to Processing 6/18/21
When applied was told expedited passport would arrive in up to 4 weeks.
It seems multiple people are giving out different info and it’s extremely confusing!
Contacted state senate offices 7/10/21
Got a call from the case worker today and he mentioned the passport is in New Orleans (Post Office said it would be in Philadelphia)
The case worker said he will call back after attempting to put a rush on the passport
Has anyone else experienced their passport coming from New Orleans? Our travel date is 7/24/21 and my nerves are completely SHOT. I know some offices are more swamped than others and that some work faster than others so anything you all know, please share!

When my bf applied, the person told him the State Dept changed their timeline for processing on 6/17/2021. The timelines have been all over the place depending on which center the passport applications are processed. His showed up in the system within 4 business days so we are hopeful, it will be processed in a timely manner. He paid for expedited as well but we are ready to reach out to the Congress person within the next week or so. Our trip is mid-August.

My applications were submitted to Philthadelphia (took only six weeks to be accepted from DC) and an additional 6 weeks later the passport books were sent from Little Rock, Arkansas; not sure where the passport cards were sent from.

Does passport delivery requires signature?

Hi
We are waiting for our son passpport renewal, but we had to use a family member address, question is if there is a special requirement for delivery? If it requires signature ? If it will be delivered to anyone at address ? Or will be left at a mailbox if there is one available

Thank you

Welcome to FT. No signature required. It will be left in mailbox. Hopefully someone at home will take it inside shortly after. If you have informed delivery, you will know delivery date.

Absolutely.

And their staff will be there and will get back to you. The staff for mine got back that day. And just contacted me with an update this morning. Apparently for some reason my passport is being processed in Houston. I am in Pennsylvania.

The email that the staff person forwarded from Houston said that my passport was not expedited when I had paid to have it done. On the US Government site where they show your progress it shows as expedited. My contact says that he is contacting the Houston office today. I asked him to make sure that they have it processed as expedited.

So yes, it is good to be proactive early as mistakes happen.

Anyone have an idea how Houston is doing with processing passports?

Has anyone tried to get a passport using an appointment for non-emergency urgent travel? I’ve been reading up on it but it doesn’t seem like it’s easy to get an appointment. I’d love to hear if anyone had experience with this.
