John, If you're only at 4k for this year, you do have to evaluate if it is worth the flight time/money to make 1k or 1p this year. Better to determine the amount of travel antisipated for next year and if it is significant give it a go after the first of the year.

With DEQM, 3 RT's to Australia and 1 domestic trip should make 1K. Of course, as others pointed out, this will require investment of time and money. So you will really need to think long and hard to see if 1K status really is worth it to you.

i usually travel 52 weeks out of the year for work but clients have cut back... we do believe based on our sales pipeline that work will pickup again next year so i really don't want to worry about earning 1k from scratch next year. besides.. i still have all my SWU's for this year that i'm sitting on that i need to use before they expire

If you're gonna use your SWUs this year, you'll have to book in at least W fare bucket, so there's no chance for the ultra-cheap (~$500) international fares. Make sure you read the T&Cs closely for the DEQM offer - looks like roundtrips, all on UA metal to qualify.
