What is a good fare to Hawaii from East Coast on UA?

Considering a trip to Hawaii in April; any advice on what would generally be a good fare in the time around Easter? Is $715 rt IAD/LIH about as good as it gets?

$715 all in is not too bad. I'd jump on it now and if it goes down later just refare.

To get a great fare, you either need competition or a mistake fare. I booked EWR-LIH for $276 on UA in May 2008 for travel in Dec 2008 in a short fare war with CO from CO's hubs to HNL and LIH. I also purchased EWR-HNL on UA for $458 RT last Spring. I frequently see UA fares from PHL to HNL in the $460 range because of competition with US, but didn't really check LIH. I would check from PHL if I were you. UA pretty well owns the market from IAD, but maybe you will see a better fare from DCA or BWI. To answer your original question, I frequently see fares < $500 from the East Coast to HNL. LIH is tougher. I see LIH for more like $650.

How about OGG?

I was checking NYC-XXX-OGG for Sep/Oct - pricing out in the $1,000 range. Trying to go weekend-weekend though, sure that doesn't help. Any chance of that dropping? Seems pretty high...

The deals are usually to HNL. Very rarely are there terrific prices to LIH or OGG.

HNL seems to have fare wars once or twice a year than can drive the prices to $400 or less. However, they might not be from your city (they tend to be from hubs, but I don't recall seeing it from IAD), and you usually have to be pretty quick to snag them.

$715 seems like a decent price.

In HNL at the moment on a <$500 fare from IAD - UA's fare sale to Hawaii earlier this year helped, dropped fares ~25% from the WAS market and made me jump on this ticket.

I used to live in HNL for about eight years. I consider any fare under $700 to be pretty good, with the average being in the the $500-$600 range.

Best fare BWI-HNL was Thanksgiving 2001 - $250.

Worst fare was BWI-LAX-HNL-LAX-BWI this past August - $1600

Planning a trip for the end of February and the recent price I found was $535, which was up from $440 a week earlier.

I used to get Delta on sale from CVG->HNL for $550. Last year I paid $1100 for July travel.

$700 is a fair price, not a great price. With April being low season, and gas continuing to stay low, I might wait a bit.

I'd say $400-$500 is a good price

I scored a $531 fare from IAD to HNL for travel 12/24/08-12/31/08, after having bought a $947 fare the previous July for the same dates. The IAD schedule was actually better too - one less connection on the return.

March & April are Spring Break time, and there can be a bit of a rush at that time. As others have said, $700 isn't bad; take it and watch, refare if possible.

Having flown from HNL to the East Coast well over a hundred times, the fares have ranged from around $600 to $1600 over the years. Of course, there's the rare exception like right after 9/11 where you could go from HNL-JFK for $250 but that won't happen again hopefully.

I'm going to DCA in two weeks and the fare was $636 so I would say $715 isn't bad at all.

I use Travelocity fare alerts set for Hawaii airports. Last part of Dec. I got two ATL/LIH tickets for late Jan. for $562. Outbound was thru ORD and inbound was thru IAD. Of course you get alerts for other airlines, but UA is usually pretty close to the others.

This looks like a good fare. FWIW, I am getting the same fares for DEN-HNL, same period.

It's a nice perk that UA allows that. Delta won't allow you to refare. Once you lock your rate in, it's yours unless you want to pay a hefty cancellation and rebooking fee.
