Are you bringing bottles or cans? If cans, then using the original packaging should work, but I wouldn't put much hope in leaving bottles in the original cases. I would pack bottle cases into another, heavier box, and still hope for the best. I have to agree with a previous post, in that using a cooler would be a much safer way of getting your beer to Hawaii.
Before the liquid ban, I used to take Yuengling over to Hawaii as my carry on. Those were the days... :D i want to do bottles, as I don't know if I can get them in cans. |

This is making me think, I am flying to Honolulu on Sunday and I have not taken any Yeungling there in years... DANGER - DANGER active thinking in progress... :D I have a feeling a new plan is being hatched. Thanks! |
i bring back beer/wine all the time whenever i travel. never once had i had a bottle break. as long as you pack it well enough, you're good.

It's not even good beer. |
possibly try
I always ck 2 cases of bottled beverage through to NZ (15x) & 2 cases of wine back (also 15x) -- yet to have a break. I find a heavier weight box that is just a bit bigger than my beverage cases, plop an old towel in the bottom, drop in the case, & fill the side spaces w/ t-shirts (or 'popcorn'), put another old towel on top, & tape it up. When TSA opens it (always), they've been careful to repack & retape; UA ck-in will ask what's in box & if you say 'bottled beer', they'll say 'no bottles except in mfg-approved boxes'; however, quite a few yr ago the ck-in lady winked when I innocently announced '2 cases of xxx' & said 'miscellaneous gift items, right?' Yes, mam. And that's what I've said ever since & no one has asked for more detail.
I have a son who makes prize-winning beers & I follow the same routine whenever I visit him -- going so far as ckng the empties through when headed his way. No breaks, full or empty, on many, many trips. FWIW |

I guess that I'm f'd there, as I just want to buy a couple of cases from costco, and check them straight as. I don't have time to re-pack a case of beer that already is packed. Oh well. I guess my friend will have to come to the mainland to get the beer he ever so wants.
It's not even good beer. If stopping at Costco, this would probably still work, bring some packing tape and garb a couple of those vegetable boxes on the way out, put your beer cases in those and I think you will be good to go. |
Such a shame... I remember that a couple of weeks prior to the quart bag of liquids rule, I carried a case of Taiwan Beer through security at RIC and boarded my flight to ORD. Put the case under the seat in front of me. No problems. Ah the good ole' days... :D

Somebody sent me.
If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Delta Airlines one year ago, you will have $49.00 today. If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in AIG one year ago, you will have $33.00 today. If you had purchased $1,000 of shares in Lehman Brothers one year ago, you will have $0.00 today. But, if you had purchased $1,000 worth of beer one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the aluminum cans for recycling refund, you will have received a $214.00. Based on the above, the best current investment plan is to drink heavily & recycle. It is called the 401-Keg. |

I, too, must confess to flying Yuengling home several times from IAD-ORD. The 12-pack from the Wegmans just north of the airport fits nicely in my rollaboard, and I just end up checking it, no casualties yet.
AFAIK the cargo holds ARE pressurized / climate controlled. The way the air handling systems work on a/c are that fresh / conditioned air comes in from overhead, and is drawn out of the pax cabin via vents near the floor. From there, it's into the cargo hold, and finally drawn out of the aircraft from there. So, the pressure and temperature are similar in both parts of the aircraft. |

if a bottle does burst, it's certainly not because of the pressure. i normally just take my clothes and wrap them around the bottles and place them throughout my suitcase.
heading to SF tomorrow, and i'll be bringing some stuff back again. i got it down to an art :) |
[QUOTE=runnersmate;10522732]I agree with Haddon! I've flown from Napa and just packed around the original box provided. [QUOTE]
Really? For a whole case? Most wine in Napa isn't that cheap, it's only $10 for a shipper that UA will accept (foam inserts). Seems like a small amount to pay to protect the wine. For 2 or 3 pack, I agree - just throw 'em in your luggage. Of course, I, like others have packed wine in my luggage and have never had an incident. I would probably shy away from a case of bottled beer that has the thin cardboard case and dividders. Maybe a case with the heavier guage cardboard, but I'd still be worried about dropping. Two weeks ago we checked a case of wine in a shipper (foam inserts) and UA didn't even ask what was in the box. The TSA opened and inspected it, then retaped. No losses. FYI - the United policy is that Wine/Beer/Liquor must be packed in "approved" shipping containers for them to take them. My personal record, was two bottles of wine and a 6 pack of San Miguel shortys packed in a Lands-End duffle bag. No special pagaging and no losses. |
So according to this thread, what would be the best way to bring some cans of beer along from MKE to Hawaii. I was thinking of something along the lines of 24 or 48 cans depending on how many bags I check. Is it possible to show up with something like a 24 pack of cans of Miller Lite at the airport with a name tag attached and just check it?
|
Again, all I wanted to do was drive to the Costco on the way to the airport, pick-up two cases (24 bottles, in the original cardboard case it come in) and go straight to ticket counter with it and check it to HNL.
I was willing to take the risk of some of the bottles missing or even breaking (though United probably won't care for that.). I concluded that it isn't advisable to do this. United baggage handlers aren't the best in dealing with Fragile stickers, plus, I will be going through SFO, so it adds a second point where the cases could be fubar. |
