Currently the My itineraries shows for the flight IAD - BRU again dinner/snack so it seems that UA has come back on the decision.
1) no one matched, and UA realized travelers might make airline decisions around this issue 2) codeshare partners balked (LH, for example) and said "are you nuts?" |

This is correct. Transatlantic BOB canceled, domestic 3-cabin business free BOB meal test still scheduled to begin on October 1, 2008.
Dear Mr. DH, Thank you for your direct, candid feedback on the test we had planned to launch in the fourth quarter for food choices on some of our flights. We heard you and have decided not to move forward with the test of offering customers buy-on-board options in United Economy on certain trans-Atlantic flights. We will continue to offer complimentary hot meals on those flights. The response from you and many of our corporate customers, even before we launched the test, told us what we would have undoubtedly learned had we proceeded – you value our hot meal service in economy class for international flights. In this environment, where higher costs driven by volatile fuel prices are now the norm, we must continue to tailor products and services so that we provide you with choices and competitive fares. As such, we will continue to be proactive in testing new ideas. On October 1, we will proceed with the test of new, complimentary options for United Business customers on three-cabin aircraft used for domestic routes, which represents 16 daily flights. Customers on these flights will receive complimentary fresh sandwiches, salads, breakfast, snack boxes or snacks, depending on the length of flight and time of departure. They will also continue to enjoy complimentary beverages, including beer, wine and cocktails. We will evaluate the results and determine next steps by the end of the year. It's also important to note that full meals will still be served on our p.s. transcontinental flights. Thank you again for your feedback. We will continue to listen and make changes that enable us in this environment to provide you with the choices you value. Sincerely, Graham Atkinson Chief Customer Officer |

Clearly they were worried that my Batman lunchbox BYOBOB would have started an alarming trend.

Special Meals

Just got mine too.
I wonder if oil < $110 is making a difference. Remember the panic started when oil nearly went to $150. If they plan for $150 oil, but pay $110, they have a 30 percent instant margin on fuel costs. I wonder how long before customers stop buying the "fuel cost" mantra... |
Same here - just a couple of idle thoughts:
In this environment, where higher costs driven by volatile fuel prices are now the norm, we must continue to tailor products and services so that we provide you with choices and competitive fares. As such, we will continue to be proactive in testing new ideas. Translation: we will continue to float panicky trial balloons in our ongoing attempts to determine which way the wind blows. Thank you for your direct, candid feedback... Er, I didn't supply any. |
Wow! UA responds using common sense.
And I'll second the notion that free sandwichs and salads in domestic C might be better than the dreck they served me last week in domestic F. |
just to make sure I get this right, 2-cabin domestic biz class (except PS) still has no free meal (no free BOB), right? So a C-class passenger on a 6-hr+ 75x flight from LAX to OGG will get no free food.
|
As an homage to the late great voice, Don LaFontaine, try to read this with his voice (silently unless you want everyone around you to think you are crazier than you are)
It works better if you start it off with 'In a world' instead of 'In this environmnent' . . . In this environment, where higher costs driven by volatile fuel prices are now the norm, we must continue to tailor products and services so that we provide you with choices and competitive fares. As such, we will continue to be proactive in testing new ideas . . . |

ditto, very interesting -- suspect it has as much as no other airline followed (aka price increases rolled backs)

From earlier posts it sounds like C will get free BOB Box, just no C class hot meal on 3-cabin domestic flights. LAX-OGG is going to be a 757 so F, so you get a meal, though the HI service it seems have been "enhanced" recently too:( |
