what is the minimum time allowed for transfers? im talking about internal to international flights (on west coast, flights/airport not decided).

It's generally called "minimum connecting time" here... if you do a search on that phrase or on "MCT," you should find what you need. Good luck!

Where are you going to be transferring? Different airports have different minimum times.

One big problem is that UA no longer publishes a table of MCTs in their timetable. Since the last one was published about a year ago there have been some changes as noted by other FT'ers making bookings. Generally you have to call to get the truly current info.

The only west coast airports where you could transfer international to international (if you're arriving and departing on UA) would be SFO & LAX. Personally I would not book anything less than a 90 minute connection ..especially if you will have checked luggage. The good thing is that both airports have immigration in the same terminal that you arrive and depart from so there won't be a long journey after clearing customs (though you will have to clear security again). If there is no line at immigration or security and you have no checked bags you could make the connection in 45 mins or even less but since there is no way to know you really should do 90 minutes or longer.

Edited to add: In case you weren't aware, all arriving passengers in the US must clear immigrations and customs even if you are simply transiting to another international flight. You must go through passport control, claim your checked luggage, go through customs, then drop off your luggage with the airline (the drop-off is an easy process), and then go through security again which makes transiting in the US more of a pain than doing it in other countries that allow you to transit without going through the hassle.
